Title: Brake Pedal Lateral Movement
Post by: f00glee on December 02, 2016, 09:13:18 am
Does anyone else have lateral brake pedal movement in thier mk5 GTI?

When braking over a bumpy surface I can feel my brake pedal moving side-to-side (left/right) by a couple mm under my foot.

Just a "feature" of the assembly, or something worth looking at further?

BUMP. If someone could see if theirs is similar, whilst on the way home, that'd be great!  :drinking:

Never experienced that in my year of ownership.

Thanks for the reply.

To confirm; this play is always there, not just when applying the brake. If I reach down and manupulate the brake pedal left & right by hand, I can feel "slop" from side to side. Now looking through pictures of the pedal assembly to see if there is anything which could have come loose...

Interesting!  I've just been out and checked mine (07 Ed30) and there is a bit of play.  It's not solidly located like the clutch and throttle pedals, but it's only about a mm I'd say.  I don't feel any movement in the pedal at all under normal braking.

If you're braking over bumps, are you sure it's not just the ABS kicking in?  It's pretty sensitive in these cars I've found.  I get that with my winter tyres if I brake a little hard, just pulses the pedal very briefly, which could feel like a bit of play I guess?

Thanks for your input. Just went and re-looked at mine and its the same. Clutch and accelerator are solid, the only lateral play is in the brake and for me may be double what you are seeing.

I can be sure its not the abs. Ive not actually activated my ABS at all in my ~6 months of ownership. Id say the movement is most noticible for me when performing extremely light breaking. So perhaps not much pressure on the pedal to stabilise it. Then when going over uneven ground my foot waggling from side to side because of the bumps in turn "waggles" the pedal a little.

Its not something I noticed until about 6 weeks ago. It's likely just me now focussing on it too much now I've noticed it.

At some point I may well whip the pedal area trim off and have a look. If I find anything adjustable to sure it up a bit ill be sure to post about it.

Good man!

Are there any knocks or clonks heard / felt when the pedal does that?  Maybe the bolts that attach the pedal to the bulkhead have come loose?  I haven't had a nose up there yet to see what's what!
