The tailgate refuses to open using either of two key fobs with new CR2032s.
I cannot hear any audible clicking or relay operation when using the tailgate button?
Is there a hidden tailgate release button inside the car?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!

If you get into the boot from the inside there should be small round panel on the inside of the tailgate, remove this and there should be a lever or something to open the boot, should tell you in the handbook.

As above, there is an emergency release lever behind the plastic pop out cover.
Does it unlock via the main central locking though, or the button on the driver's door?

Had the same problem with my brothers mk5 yesterday, the Wee panel pops off from inside boot lid, there's a metal lever pull it upwards and your boot will open it may be an acuator that has failed or a broken wire I will be checking his later so if I find out I will let you know the likely cause as his wont even attempt to open with the keys either

Open your tailgate manually as mentioned. Where the wires pass from the top left of the car through to the top left of the tailgate pull back the protective rubber sleeve to expose the wires. The wires normally break there. :)
