Long story short, oil pressure warning came on and I can now hear a very loud knocking sound.
Took it to a VW specialist and he said he have a look at it so I left him with it, he chased me down the road and said I know what's wrong. You need a new engine.
I'm gutted, couldn't have come at a worse time. I live in Manchester where can I source an engine from.
-
The infamous blocked oil pickup pipe?
Ebay is probably your first port of call. Can't the garage do this on your behalf? I assume they will be fitting the engine?
-
I think they turned it on and it died there and then personally.
-
Yeah I think I will see if the garage can source one.
Am I limited to the golf gti engine or are all TFSI engines suitable I.e Audi s3 Leon cupra TT etc.
What do you think the ball park for a engine is, they already said £500 for fitting.
I'm seething absolutely gutted, I have only drove the car around 20 miles and only got it on the road 2 days ago.

Im sure iv seen a few people fit the s3 engines
-
Gutted for you mate :sad1:
What car is it for?
What is the original engine type in the car (AXX - BWA?)
What mileage on the dead Motor?
You should be able to source an engine without too much difficulty.
AXX are cheap. BWA middling. CDL are expensive. Really depends which one you want/need
-
gutted for ya mate not what you need this close to crimbo!
I'm in same predicament although I knew what I was getting into when I bought it (sort of). your looking at about 1300 for a lump on ebay and theres not that many on there either.
good luck
-
It's the AAX, to be fair I just want the cheapest way to get it back on the road so if iaax is cheapest that's what's going in. Hopefully getting one that's done less miles than mine at 114k.
-
There's one for sale on here bud :happy2:

Mate that sucks big time. Have you just brought it? If so surly you have some sort of buyers protection.
-
Too many MK5 GTIs are dying prematurely due to either the oil pickup or cam chain tensioners. If I ever get another one they will be the first job on my list. I'm gutted for you mate, hope you get it sorted soon.

This looks promising!!
-
if you buy another engine depending on the damage of yours you should return a fair chunk of your money back breaking yours for spares.
-
Yeah just bought it, but from auction!!! No come back.
Think I'm gonna let the garage try and source one so if it goes again I hopefully have some recourse.
-
I think I want to get an engine that's done less that 100k or I could be in the same predicament in 12 months.
Can anyone give a difinitive answer as to what engine codes would be a straight swap.
AXX
BWA seem to be a straight swap
Seen a CCZ from a mk6 GTI for £1300 with only 25000 miles but unsure of fitting.
Are all TFSI engines the same.
-
I'm struggling to find an engine at the moment with decent miles sub 80k.
What are people's thoughts on having the engine reconditioned ata specialist place, had a quote of £1800 from a place called Eurojap in stretford manchester only about 5 miles from where I live.
This is the spiel on their website.

Today, at Eurojap, our customers can expect a full-line of quality engine reconditioning including our Standard reconditioned engines that includes new, off the shelve, parts. We carry a stock for every European and Japanese vehicle including cars, trucks, commercial (light) and 4 x 4’s, and if for any reason the required part is not in stock, we can quickly source it and usually have it available in less than 24 hours.

Our quality is ranked as one of the best in the industry and we aim to please by supplying our customers with satisfaction and a reasonable guarantee.
Although we acquire our new parts from various sources, we guarantee them for defects, damage, and cracks and can often machine speciality parts in-house, making reconditioning a breeze.
When doing a Standard Reconditioned engine, we use a re-board block, new pistons, reground crank, new bearings, fitted timing chain, test the head, surface ground, and new stem seals, fit the camshaft, new top tensioner, and overhaul the oil pump.
At Eurojap, speciality parts can be designed and machines by your engineers to enhance the performance of your reconditioned engine. We have the necessary expertise to pull it all together and provide you with superior quality and excellence.
Because we have expert knowledge and accredited workmanship, Eurojap has become one of the best reconditioning company in all of the United Kingdom. for that price I would want new valves, seats and guides aswell. shop around you will get a much better price imo.
-
I don't know, the ad doesn't read the best to be honest. Loads of errors in it. Errors and engine builders don't go well together. I know it's only an ad but I'd probably talk to an Indy VW specialist if I was going down the rebuild route. You want someone who knows these engines back to front if you're rebuilding.
-
Any suggestions for engine rebuilders ?
-
Be careful as loads of "professional" places that do engine rebuilds still manage to stuff things up.
My mate had his 1.8T rebuilt with race cams and new pistons and found out a week later the cam was out a few degrees, was seeping oil and no gasket was put back on.
This was from a place that does this thing day in day out so shocking really.

VW are a nightmare for making subtle changes to the engine management across the different engines, so I would personally put back in exactly what came out for a simple life.
Or if you have no other choice, make sure you get the ECU and harnesses from the donor car as well as the engine, just in case!
Don't laugh, but have you checked for a price from VW for a long block? I know that sounds like a bonkers idea, but in the past I've been surprised at their engine prices because occasionally they try and shift old stock at good prices. Some ebay traders also hoover them up and sell them as "new old stock", so it's worth a little bit of fishing.
I don't like rebuilt engines. The honing is never done to factory standards and no one ever cleans all the oil galleries out properly either. Don't overlook options from Seat / Audi / Skoda as they all shared the same engine at some point.
-
Think the garage are putting me off a rebuilt engine also.
At the moment it has a BWA engine in it, I have seen another BWA engine. It it's from a TT
As long as I get the same engine code will the engine be the same or are there different BWA engines for the different marques.

Thoughts?
-
BWA is BWA so will fit.
TFSI is general. AXX, BWA, CDL etc is what defines the TFSI engine to the different cars, ages, mark of model etc.
-
Oh good, I can see this one still has the turbo which I am worried that will have failed also and if it has done the miles suggested then should hopefully be ok.
-
That looks promising! Clutch (albeit a bit rusty looking ) and coils etc still there. Looks like the seller has good feedback. They might offer a warranty for 3 months or something?
-
Went for this one in the end, from a reputable place there are so many dodgy engine places it's a bit of a murky world the engine business.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361853005600
Garage are going to do the cam belt kit with it and said about changing the pile pump which was the reason my last one failed.
Spoke to Tps and you can only buy the pump with the full housing for over £1000 is anyone aware if you can get the pump separately?? Garage seem to think so.

Looks like a decent outfit. No mention of mileage though?
Oil pump is part of the balancer assembly and not available separately. That is partly why some people bin off the balancer unit and convert to the older 1.8T pump. How did the old one fail? Snapped chain?
Might be worth pulling the intake manifold off and decarboning the valves before it goes in as well.
-
You can either have a modified 1.8T oil pump fitted, or you can get the current oil pump modified to do away with the balance shaft setup. JNL Racing offer both from memory
-
When you ring tps tell them you're trade or a taxi, you should get a discount on a lot of stuff, i used to get 30% everything when my mate worked there, but now i only get around 10%, also use a site called partsgateway, it will source everything you need
-
Engines done 89000, there were ones on eBay with less but you just have to trust the person who's selling it.
What parts are worth harvesting off the old engine for resale to try and recoup some of my money back?
Thanks

Mate; you're so right about buying from a trusted source. A friend of mine got duped not once but twice! by an unscrupulous crook selling engines!!
Basically everything off the engine that's not bust will be worth stripping and selling. Turbo, Coils, clutch, flywheel, cam cover, inlet manifold, various sensors all should be worth reasonable fee quid depending on condition.
Other things like VVC control valve, auxiliary belt tensioner, Thermostat, water pump etc might be worth something to someone too :happy2:
Good luck with it buddy!!
-
Been there done that lol. It is very painful.
I replaced a AXX with a BWA engine, bought a complete engine with turbo, aircon etc to save the hassle of swapping old stuff. Sold good bits from old engine, cylinder head, turbo, compressor, alternator etc to claw back a few quid.
Would recommend doing the clutch and flywheel while engine is out.

Slight hijack here... Whats the common issue with oil pick up pipe?? I have a 06 gti and never heard of it?

Basically the oil pickup pipe in the sump becomes blocked with dirty bits of oil etc and starves the engine of oil. It's quite a cheap item to replace as a precaution.
