Title: Rust not covered by warranty
Post by: Shamm on December 09, 2016, 10:05:06 pm
Been to vw today and got the wheel arches checked and was told i wont qualify because the car wasnt serviced with vw throughout it life. Is this true or are they trying not to deal with it ? anyone with something same ?

That's shouldn't matter mate as long as it's less that 12 years old and the wing haven't been resprayed. Try a different dealership

Lol massive fob off. Go back to them and say you will launch an official complaint with vw UK if they don't sort it.

I like the way they think that getting a car serviced by them will keep rust away

They are talking a load of rubbish, its their excuse for getting out of doing the work. My GTi hasnt been serviced at a main dealer for years and Ive had both wings done.

My understanding, and this came from the dealership who did mine,  is that VW only pay half towards the repair cost, the dealer has to cover the other half of the cost, so that is why some are trying to get out of doing the repairs.

I just got a Touran and was fobbed off with the rusty arches and tailgate as the car was a month past the ten year old limit - 'edge and fold' was mentioned, just like 'zinc inclusion' on my last car.
I previously had four wings through this dealer and the same inspector. It seems they make the rules up as they go these days, last wing I had they wanted a contribution but after seeing on here others got it free, they sent me a cheque refund once I complained.

To be fair, I am just going to get it done by my mate who has a body shop and I know the rear of the wing will then be protected too.

I don't get why some people even pay half. They can't offer a 12 year corrosion warranty and not stick to it.

You wouldn't expect to pay half the repair price of a TV if it went wrong in the warranty period.

Its a sly way of making you buy it knowing that youll be covered but infact its a load of s**t

Print out the internal vw bulletin on the issue and go back to the same dealer with it. If they still don't play ball go to vw uk.

Yeah I don't know why people give up so easily.

Got to agree with @99hagued here, it's a case of finding the right dealer. Some play ball, some don't.

I used JCT600 in Hillsborough and they were spot on. No messing around checking service history and I felt like a customer rather than a problem.

From everything I've read about this I'm considering myself lucky that I got it sorted at the first attempt. Don't throw the towel in. Getting the wings done yourself or even going halves with VW is a lot of money.

Never heard of people paying half towards the costs...that is mad!

Its solely down to the dealer and VW to foot the bill...thats why they extended the warranty in the first place because they knew there was a manufacturing problem.

If the dealer plays up, they are trying to get out of paying their half, so either move to the next dealer in my opinion.

When I got my wings done they where saying that the gti is 10 year corrosion and 12 year paint imperfection I had to fight and I phoned vw head office and they done it through a GOOD WILL gesture ! But to be honest  there is more rust on my mk5 than my mk2 !!

+1

I dealt with my local dealer (Inchcape Colchester) and got the driver's side wing done straight away + a courtesy car.  2 day turn around. Super impressed with that. Perfect paint match too.

It's actually a good way to check if your car has ever been in a prang too.  The chap went over the front half of my car, inc doors, with his paint depth meter thingy and all was good. Because let's face it, a lot of private / trade sellers are dishonest at the best of times, so it's good for peace of mind.

I think where the 'good will' bit comes into it probably relates to the sills, just behind the front wheel arch.  I think they only get a 3 or 5 year warranty, something to do with what VW call "edge and fold", which is a sneaky way to be selective about what parts of the car they warranty.  And I bet that isn't mentioned to customers buying the car new.  "12 year anti-corrosion warranty".  Hmmmm, not quite.

If I ever buy a car new from VW, I will sit there in the dealership until 30 minutes past closing time reading all the small print
