Title: Coding help - Hinckley
Post by: white91 on December 11, 2016, 04:32:04 pm
Help I've fitted a multifunction steering wheel today.

Now it doesn't steer straight

All the lights are on on the dash, despite me doing lock to lock and a drive

My VCDS has stopped working

No buttons or horn work

Can anybody help me out?

Did the loom have a plug for the buttons? Could try my loom if it gets you on he road, Mines garaged till spring now. Just an awkward bugger taking the wheel (airbag) off

Mine (same as mk5) didn't have the spade terminals, that I remember.  I'll take a look for some pics

I'll whip mine out (loom lol) if I get time and you can replace mine in due course, if you can't get one before you come down?

Unless you want to order one and try it 1st. But I suspect you'll still need it coding

Not sure it's really R-Tech's domain.

Could be worth a call but they're mega busy and getting booked in can be quite tough.  They're local though.

No worries, was just a thought as I guessed they'd have everything you needed once you got the loom, hope you sort it :happy2:

On this subject, if I wanted a mfsw do I have to buy one or just the buttons because mines dsg?

For a dsg wheel it's just the buttons I think, mine is manual so a bit more tricky

I've done this recently, so I can help, maybe.

That mk6 loom is compatible with the connections, but is not long enough to plug in properly. You might have pulled out one of the connections when you plugged it in. The horn probably doesn't work because you've got a cable jammed in the way.

What Steering wheel module did you replace with? CH version?

You really do need the correct mk5 airbag loom for this, so you should definitely get one before giving it in to be fixed

I did notice the spade connectors were not long enough so I fitted them the only way it would go, so ideally I would extend the wiring?

Yeah I fitted a CH controller.

Does anybody know what the coding is for it?

The coding depends on what other bits you've got on the car, but it's straight forward with VCDS. You need to set it to LIN 1.3, not 2.0

I wouldn't be trying to extend a loom on anything with the airbag connected to it. You can plug your old loom in for now without any problem.

The steering wheel/ESP/ABS lights won't go out until it's coded, but you just need to repeat the full left, center, full right until it's aligned. The power steering will just instantly start working. Took me 2 goes and 10 minutes of sh*tting myself before it just started working fine.

Thanks, I think I might refit the original loom to get power steering back, will the other lights not go out if I do this?

Been quoted £54 for a loom from TPS, it's it's the usual go into branch, pay for it then collect few days later, I live miles away!

Other option is one from china?

I got mine from China, It was Genuine VW, just with asian writing all over it. link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151532836896

The lights won't go out until you've coded the CH module and done the steering angle reset. The loom won't help you with this, it'll just enable the buttons and the horn to work properly.

Thanks Mike, can all the coding be done now, and I simply fit the new loom when it arrives?

This is my daily vehicle and I should have done my research a little better!

The coding can be done without fitting anything else, I installed my CH module and coded it before I did any MFSW installation

you need to look at the helper popup window and see what equipment you have on that list like cruise control, rear wiper, auto/manual etc and then work out what number goes where into the coding box

Ok I'm gonna fit the old loom, code the CH controller with cruise, rear wiper, manual.

Order the correct loom and fit when it arrives.

One of my friends locally has VCDS, tried coding it tonight, it would accept any coding. I swapped the loom back to the old one to eliminate that, still no joy.

If I replace the swcm with the original should that work?

Yeah I've ordered the correct loom, I just need my car fully functional for work. Will sort out all the coding when I've got the loom sorted
