Hi lads, just recently bought a mk5 gti, good service history with 86k on the clock, but there is a slight tapping, clicking noise at idling, took it for full specialist service for piece of mind, explained to the guy about the noise he thought "charcoal filter"? But when I collected the car he now says all the belts may need doing, but previous owner had these done 10k ago with receipt to prove, any ideas what it could be? I'm going to book it in to the garage again as it's doing my head in?? Any help greatly appreciated thanks

Check the charcoal canister is seated properly, mine wasn't put back on properly after cambelt/waterpump change

One possibility is the fuel line rattle, search on here, it's been covered.

Just collected the car there, he reckons I need a chain kit, going to sting me £450! He says it's the chain starting to rattle which is making the noise

Keep us posted mate
hope the outcome isn't paying £450

Collect the car Friday, payed the £450 and later that day the noise returned just exactly the same on idle, safe to say il be bringing the car back in the new year!

i would of thought a ticking tapping noise would be more cam chain then belt noise's i had mine replaced last week mine was silent when cold but ticked when warm at idle whats yours noise like when cold?

Does it go away with slight throttle?
Could be the alternator pulley, have had to change a few.

I got a similar issue on my ED30 on idle. It goes away when you press the throttle.
Will be interesting to see what you find. I just had a new cambelt and head rebuilt
