Title: Key fob replacment?
Post by: unzippy on December 26, 2016, 08:15:01 pm
The unlock buttin no longer unlocks.
The other two buttons work fine.
Changed the battery, no difference.

Spare fob is fine.

I guess I need new guts for the fob?  Where's best to get it from?

Ta.

eBay would be your best bet, look for the 1K0 959 753 G 434MHz fob for your MK5. You can buy brand new if your existing remote looks battered or to minimise costs purchase a genuine used remote fob as it can be reprogrammed to match your car locking system.

You will need VCDS (VAGCOM) to complete the coding to match the keys, info can be found here (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/vw-remote-matching.html).

Looking through the link, you don't need to input the secret code from your black plastic tab, I was under the impression vcds couldn't extract the immobilizer code, and I'd need another tool. Does this method code both the fob for remote and immobilizer? I'm planning on getting another cut soon so if I can cut the cost down to just a blank fob + cutting...

As far as I can tell the link is just for the key-less remote control, not immobiliser chip.

Learnt how to use VAGCOM and the cable today.

Bought a new fob carcass and a second hand fob including the guts.
There are three parts.  The key blade, the immobiliser chip and the circuity that does the unlock/lock/boot.
Using the new fob carcass, the second hand fob and my duff one I made a working one and then coded it to the car with the VAGCOM.  Quite proud of myself

Just a word of warning - I think the link above to the rosstech site is missing a step.
You can't add a new fob to an existing setup.
You need to delete all fobs from the car and then add them all together.

Positive.
Pressed the button, LED flashed but no unlocking action.

Yep same here. The led flashes for lock and boot but doesn't work for unlock which is really irritating

Mine is looking a bit grotty too and the key ring hook on the end has broken.
Can you not just buy a new casing of eBay and transfer the internals ie. the existing blade and chip from the old key ?

Yes you can.  Which is what I did.  But I also needed the circuitry under the buttons that I got from a secondhand key.

What about if you have no second key and want to add one?   Dealer only?

Was 2 keys an option, or standard?

I sometimes wonder if dodgy sellers deliberately withhold the spare key and say it was lost, with the intention of stealing the car back again?

No they hold them as they are £150 to replace from dealers so they can make a quick buck on ebay....well that's my opinion  :thinking:j

I want to add a second key when I get the chance as long as it's not too expensive. From the research I have done it's quite easy to get a blade cut and sync the remote central locking, but it's the RFID immobiliser which causes the problems. I *think* it may be possible to buy a blank RFID chip and have a local auto locksmith clone your current one?

You can do that, yes. The local auto locksmith will clone your functioning RFID chip to your blank one.

This is a chip that can be used: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291274140896 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291274140896)

Any locksmith (http://www.doncasterlocksmiths24h.co.uk/) can make a clone key or there are some specified locksmiths.
