Would someone kindly borrow me a timing locking tool if they have one so I can do my timing belt and water pump?. Or can I get away without using one as I did a Audi 1.6 New Years.
Thanks

Twice I watched my VW tech use zip-ties when working on mine strapping the cams to the head. I now wish I had gotten vid of the process because it was a slick trick...and he stated the tool is a "Tool".

Thanks for your reply @ROH ECHT (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3794)
I wished you had made a video as I rarely use the tools when doing cam belt jobs and have never had an issue yet. Just don't want to damage the tfsi as this will be the first one I've ever repaced.
-
Locking tool for changing the cam belt? Just use the timing marks. I did have a cam locking tool used for the chain but a member borrowed them and not had them back.

lol I've figured I can do it the same as I did the A3 1.6 on New Year's Day :signLOL:
Exactly the same principle using the timing marks as dazza said thanks :happy2:
I think pesky used it and damaged it  then got it welded and went off to its new temporary home

Oi its not like I dropped them or something, I just tried to use it as it was designed to be used, and the pins bent! It worked fine after welding, I assume worked fine for tommy as well? If anything you might say I improved the tool  :signLOL:

lmao yeah but wonder why it snapped off in the first place :signLOL:
I'm just going to use this method as I've been doing for years and it works well :happy2:
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135872 That should be a sticky :P

lmao yeah but wonder why it snapped off in the first place :signLOL:
Pins bent because the force required to release the adjustor bolt was greater than the resistance of the pins. Simples :)
-
Uh Oh! I just ordered a cheap Chinese one off eBay for this job. What's the Bets the pins will bend!!

Do yourself a favour and get them welded before hand?

Be interesting to know if @tommygti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5865) used the tool and how he got on.
@ducman77 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7463) do you have the original tool to remove the bolt?

oh oh  I remember seeing a cover to view the belt but not sure if it's a two piece cover. Will have to take a closer look at it tbh.

If its a little panel you remove to see the belt this is the one piece.

Cheers Dazza. Gonna buy that piece genuine from VE. Priced it up the other day. only €9 bargain!
I might look at strengthening the pins before I attempt the job. Cheers all :happy2:

Come to think of it my TT was a nightmare to get the engine mount bracket out :signLOL:

Left hand side of the mount out first. Jack the engine up as high as you can.

I would have uploaded the A3 one I did New Years but this site doesn't allow easy uploading like fb and other sites. :sad1:

@dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) Do you want me to post it straight to him? or is that the address you gave me?
I ended up having to drill the camshaft adjuster bolt out as it had never been changed and rounded off as it was pretty much seized. It was an absolute bitch. My mechanic did it in the end as I didn't have the patience or time. If you plan on doing the job yourself I would advise that you take your time and preferably get a mate to help you as it can be an expensive job if you f*ck it up like I did. I'l try and find the guide I used as it was very useful. All good now though and running fine.

I had to drill mine off also.
Please send it to the address i gave you.

I'd say you NEED two people when it comes to the adjustor bolt. Stress the importance to your "assistant" of the socket not leaving the bolt or slipping. I used a 3ft breaker bar to get a good leverage. r5 you're not too far from me, perhaps I could give you a hand if needed?
Pleased to see that the communal tool has resurfaced  @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

What adjuster bolt are you guys referring too
Cheers Pesky that's mighty kind of you to offer your help.
I wouldn't need that tool unless I was going some head work right?
My mates going to help me and he's also a mechanically minds guy so hopefully will be fine. :drinking:

Oh sorry im confused, thought you were doing the cam chain, in which case you need to undo the adjustor bolt. Ignore me :)
No worries :)

oh I see :signLOL: no not just yet although that is always on my mind but not mapped yet so the stress isn't as bad as when being mapped and tearing up the roads :driver:

Don't hold me to it but it might help to heat the bolt up with a small blow torch or similar before attempting to loosen it.
