Title: A quick hello plus a lil help needed
Post by: Richardireson on January 03, 2017, 06:13:21 pm
Hi all. Thought I'd say hi.
Brought an edition 30 a fews months ago (will attach a pic or two)
had a few mods all ready done before I got it. miltek cat back. Itg filter and intake piping and a stage 1 remap (shark performance) anyone heard of them cause I hadn't lol.

So far been very impressed for the most part but I have been having an intermittent boost issue . Some days it will hold 18 ish psi and others it's topping at 14 if I'm lucky then holding 11-12. Some times it only reaches 10 psi. Not discovered a leak yet and checked the dv and pcv. Both seem fine.
Hoping to find someone near luton with vagcom who may be able to run some boost logs and health check the old girl. Hope it's not to cheeky to be asking help on my first post.

Although your dv shows no sign of damage it may not be up to the challenge of an ed30 with a map.

I would upgrade to a GFB DV+ regardless of whether or not it rectifies the issue. Start here and then see how you go. Next could be a semi blocked PCV pipe which I had. I replaced the top lines and the PCV and they were fine but I noticed it wasn't 100% so I removed the bottom longer PCV pipe and it was coated with sut/carbon. After replacing I noticed it boosted just slightly better especially in the cold funnily enough.

Cheers for the reply
Would it be worth getting a revision "g" dv for the sake of 40 quid. As its currently running a "c"
Or is it worth spending double for the gfb? I'll check the pcv lines later too.

I had the same dilemma recently, go for another OEM dv or the DV+. My thinking was I'll eventually have to get another OEM dv as it will blow...maybe not for a good few miles, but it will eventually, thus meaning I'll eventually spend £80-£90 anyway. So I went for the DV+, got one for £90 delivered on an ebay 'make offer' job!

Rev G will split just as soon as a Rev C so just save up and get the GFB DV+

I'd be very surprised if your Rev C was intact, are you sure that it was when you removed it?

Mine almost seems bit worse in the colder weather.
As for the dv, i was surprised it seemed OK. I had it out last night hoping to find a tear but the orange rubber likes good had it right out and inspected it. Could t even find a pin hole. Thou could have missed one.

Change the DV and see how you get on. Like Luke says, the oem valves only tend to stay healthy for so long, so changing it at some point is more or less inevitable.

I'm on an OEM rev G. It's been on for 18 months, and still seems to be working perfectly. And that's with Stage 2 boost levels.

Only problem with going for the GFB straight off the bat is that if it doesn't cure the problems you're left with a little less budget for troubleshooting. Although it is fit and forget. Depends how you see it; if you're keeping the car for a while or have plans for more boost then it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the GFB.

Shark are quite well known. Mansfield based. I'm not sure if the maps are generic or custom, but it's certainly not some cowboy outfit if that's what you're concerned about. Went round Oulton with Ben (of Shark) in their track car a good few years ago. Good chap and knows the game.

If it's a rev C it's likely the original valve. Even though you can't see any faults it's fair to say it's an old part that won't have much life left in it. The fact your boost is sporadic doesn't shout DV to me. But it's one of those jobs you could do with getting out of the way for the sake of preventative maintenance, like the PCV and cam follower.

As a side note.

Two REV G DV's went for sale today. I believe @Dan_FR (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9513) has a brand new one for £30 and a nearly new for £25

Little update.
Took the car to vagtech in mk . For them to take a look. They couldn't find nought wrong with it. Boosting fine. Fueling fine etc. Dv and pcv fine. Hitting it's targets.
Maybe I'm just got used to the torque lol.
Happy its running well. Maybe I need stage 2 to feel the GO  again lol
Cheers for all the pointers and advice

Oh and the app "torque" I used to gauge my boost preasure quite incorrect compared to vagcom.
Also I found it told me I was only hitting 88% throttle . But checked out fine on vagcom

Didn't realise you had used the app.

It's a bag of sh*te, handy for deleting a dash light but totally useless for real time information. Get a Polar FIS for that
