Myself and my wife flew to Tromso in Norway to spend a week there over Christmas. Beautiful place, wonderful people with plenty of snow and Northern lights.
We flew with Norwegian Airlines and the flights were approx £70 per person each way. Due to a shortage of pilots qualified to land in icy Tromso airport our flight back home was delayed by nearly 7 hours once suitably qualified pilots could be located (Don't ask!!!).
Having filled out the forms the day after our return I have just received an email from Norwegian Airlines notifying me that €800 has been deposited in my account as compensation! Thank you Norwegian Airlines and thank you thisismoney.co.uk for your template letter which I used to make my claim.
£685 compensation for £140 of flights is what I call a result!! :happy2:

Me and my wife were fobbed off by qatar airways and ended up delayed for 12 hours a few years back. I think we got around 500 each.

That's good going!
Why don't you post up the template letter here for others that might be in a similar situation...
My sister and her family were offered €4,500 last month if they took a flilght one day later because it was overbooked and she declined :jumping:

My parents were delayed 10 hours a few years ago, in Ibiza. They got back £400 each and there was four in their party. They didn't even leave the hotel as they knew the flight was delayed , so spent an extra 10 hrs on holiday. Flew home late at night which was the only negative.

Link to the page that I got my information from is here:- http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/holidays/article-2271213/How-claim-EU-flight-delay-compensation-EC-261-2004.html
Template letter is toward the bottom of the page. :-)

Last year, on our way out to Toronto, flying with Air Transat our flight was delayed by 4.5 hours from Heathrow. To be honest i hadn't given a thought to claiming compensation, however if there is a chance i will give it a shot.

Nice, I have worked nightshift in Tromso in complete daylight. Amazing place and a great end result for you.

@Degudodger (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2485) At 600 Euros per person it is worth sending them the letter. I went onto Norwegian Airlines "Delayed Flight Compensation" page, totally ignored all their standard questions that they try to get you to answer, and typed the template letter into the "Other Comments" section at the end. It worked a treat!!

As you say Tromso is an amazing place and we will definitely revisit it one day.

How does the claim work if the internal airport transfer bus isn't quick enough to reach the plane and the flight just leaves without so many of the passengers. Now these passenger had that listed as their connecting flight - so is there grounds for compensation since this caused an all paid for over night stay in Dubai?

I can't see this ruling being relevant to your case as your flight wasn't delayed or cancelled. As far as I am aware if you miss your flight due to issues such as those that you mentioned then the only obligation is to get you on the next available flight at no extra cost to yourself, which they seem to have done.

Thank you for your thoughts, just wishful thinking on my behalf.

Isn't it mad though that soon you will be able to claim more for a delayed flight than a genuine injury caused by someone else's negligence on the road? Too many fraudsters and claims farmers means the rights of the public in this regard will soon be taken away. See the below tariff schedule for injuries from RTA's due to come in on 1st October 2018 -
Injury Duration New tariff amounts
0–3 months £225
4–6 months £450
7–9 months £765
10–12 months £1,190
13–15 months £1,820
16–18 months £2,660
19–24 months £3,725
