Title: Jacks mk5 Tornado Red GTI
Post by: Pagejack on January 06, 2017, 12:47:33 am
Hi I'm new to the forum so thought I'd start abit of a thread on the progress of my car.

This is my first vw after previously owing a civic ep3 type r and integra dc5 type r.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000323.jpg&hash=1ba9f95cd3370587431fbfa27e70250fc7d77f1e)

I picked it up Wednesday and have to say am extremely pleased with how smooth the ride is and the power, even though it's the same bhp as the hondas I'm not used to having torque so the power delivery is fantastic!.

The golfs details are as follows
-2006 With 61k
-DSG
-3 door
-Tornado red
Here's a couple of pics from the garage
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20170102_221110.jpg&hash=58cccf843a466433e4246a6e457b5fa5e6412a75)

The garage had 3 golfs but this seemed to seem to have a couple of nice extras such as heated seats, puddle lights in the wing mirrors & uprated kenwood headunit which swayed me towards this one.

Having my brother work for TPS has proven rather beneficial the last couple of days have purchased the following
- genuine new interior trim (door handles , heater vents, head unit surround)
- genuine golf embroided floor mats
- carbon paddle shift extenders (ebay)
- genuine edition 30 rear splitter

I have a few plans for the car but need to wait for next pay day now!

I'll post some pics when my bits arrive (should be tomorrow)

This looks a great forum and look forward to having a look through other peoples builds.

Thanks
Jack

So the not spending on it went great today and ended up doing a 6 hour round trip to pick up some edition 30 wheels.

Good condition on the whole and came up for the right money.

They were in need of a good wash down and started to seal them with poor boys wheels sealant.

I got my brother to grab me x4 new centre caps and new wheel bolt covers

Looking good so far mate. This is exactly how mine started, I said I wouldn't do much because I spent all my money on the car and have been throwing money at it for the last 3 years

I think colour coded and gloss black on the splitter will look bang on.  :happy2:

Today's been a productive one, managed to spare some time to give the car a good clean,

Although it seems a decent base its crying out for paint correction so got in touch with a friend who has a double garage turned into a heated detailing booth and is up for the challenge.

Managed to swap the tired interior plastics over, think I'm in need of new window switches now though which I probably should have thought of....

The cars going in end of February for the rear eddy lip and skirts to be painted so want it all corrected for then.

So last week I decided I needed abit of noise on the golf and looked into the milltek non res cat back exhausts but was mindful as I didn't want it to loud.
Friday I placed an order with lark speed performance through eBay and was massively impressed with there service, I ordered it around 1pm on the Friday and it turned up Monday morning.
Here's a couple of pics fitted
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi281.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk206%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F20170123_191910.jpg&hash=04a3fab5024a059d0ea52b3fee0443107ef1edc6)

I was impressed with  the noise as it's not to loud at all and is still quiet in the cabin. I'm guessing it will free up a little once bedded in.

So decided to get the wheels refurbished before I put them on in a hyper silver and thought while I'm there ill order new tyres so it's all fresh, I used to run nankang ns2-r on both my civic and integra and were fantastic for road use and our yearly trip to the nurburgring however I wanted something a little quieter, I decided to go for the michelin pilot sport 3's in 225 40 18.
Just waiting on my final quote before I send them in.

big thanks to my brother yet again for sorting it for me and getting the bits from TPS, better make sure hes on my Christmas card list this year!

Thanks

The cars been booked in for Monday 6th march to have the following;
-edition 30 front splitter fitted (colour coded with gloss black centre)
-smoothed front bumper with plate holes removed
-Colour coded side skirts
-Edition 30 rear bumper (colour coded with gloss black centre)

In preparation I ordered some pressed number plates With my private registration :D
I've gone full size rear (20.5")  and a slightly smaller 17" for the front

I have also spent some more time getting the wheels ready, sealed with poor boys wheel sealant followed by a wax using meguiars carnuba wax and then a spray over with mad cow ultra violet speed detailer.

Friday I had the call to inform me I could go and pick my car up from the bodyshop! I was super excited to get down there and pick it up.
Saturday I fitted my wheels and gave it a good clean and grabbed a few photos

So there hasn't been much progress on the modification front but managed to get the car in my friends garage for a x2 stage paint detail.
we decided it would need cutting back and then bringing back up with the extra fine grade, we had a choice of compounds and decided to go with the meguiars.
we used the following:
- Rupes Big Foot DA polisher
- Valet pro advanced Snow Foam
- neutral Shampoo
- Autosmart tyre blacker (doesn't splat your wheels or arches)
- Meguiars cutting and polishing compound
- Gyeon Sealent
- Alot of mirofibres

We started giving the car a snow foam to remove any surface grime, let it develop for about 5-10 minutes and removed with the jet wash, whilst the car was wet we then removed any tar. once the car was grime free we then used a neutral shampoo (didnt grab the brand) as we didnt want to apply any waxes during the washing stage and got in the garage for a closer inspection.

Even though on previous photos the car looked clean it appeared the paint had a haze/mist all over it, we thought it could have been from previous owners taking it to generic car washes and TFR stains.

Heres a quick pic of the paint on the bonnet before we started,
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FBED7B645-B801-4C6D-8DAA-3754A7DA5765.jpg&hash=5bf40bef96d3d10b8ef0e55b72af84bd11e309ea)

We thought a 50/50 on the bonnet would be a good place to start to see if the haze would be removed by the compound or whether we would have to get something more coarse,
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F6401703A-FC01-4CE4-8C3F-671D902BDE2E.jpg&hash=bce515102f513ace40bdead69b997fdc42bc37a4)

The above was after the cutting stage,we continued to do the rest of the bonnet and go over with the polishing compound the difference was unreal!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FBBFEC4C8-6161-435F-A8A6-8340E8638C8B_1.jpg&hash=c9dcff1ec8e8021bbfab7a24bb4164daa37fbd64)

we then carried on around the car and the difference from when we started were night and day

To seal the paint we used Gyoen Paint sealent which will have around 6-12 months protection.

My friend then saw the steering wheel and was disgusted, said it was far to shiny and needs some attention, he grabbed some g-tehnique cleaner and a new white micro to see what came off it,
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F6594FFA8-8353-444E-A620-1DFB8B4C5934.jpg&hash=2b47a53a4e938a0aa84c3f8bdc8b203daf997b0f)

after around 5 - 10 minutes of cleaning it came out like this
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F0A666A82-945D-4884-89A5-227CE8C26422.jpg&hash=028c8e2578a8a529f56a149f69aea4af7988c591)
it now has a nice matt finish again and looks 10 times better than the shiny plastic look prior.

I then went to meet another friend who has a rather modified mk7 R, still rolling his genuine RS3 limitied edition wheels on Accuair Elevel air ride with a boot build installation completed by plush automotive!! :o
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F3F9E729E-5966-4565-A0B8-6F64BEF496E2.jpg&hash=3d7b6cd95a672e5fa2e632452169578f4bf4cca7)

I am massively impressed with how the car came out and happy we managed to remove 99% of the swirls, obviously theirs still bits i want sorting after putting it next to the lads's mk7 R's but for 11 years old it hasn't come up bad at all!

Thanks Jack

Tornado red is one of my favourite colours when it's looked after and that looks so good! I could do with correcting the paint on my pirelli, it's just finding time to do it!

Yeah red is a very rewarding colour when clean, turns alot of heads. although i have found the misting is coming back on the bonnet, not sure if its a product im using when doing my weekly clean, have to mix it up and see if i can stop it coming back.

not seen a pirelli edition in the flesh are there many visual differences?

Not much happening at the moment as moneys been spent elsewhere but any ho just a quick update

For a while now the rear disks and pads have bothered me,they have always looked really rusty and well worn so decided for how much they were id get my brother to pick me some up when at work.

I went for just the standard oem solid disks and oem pads
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FA1CEBEC2-41D5-43E4-8D6A-69315EA61912.jpg&hash=921471a9d3ab29e774882484e31efaf5abe4c156)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FF1F58623-9D14-4D34-99D9-9551B6400DAF.jpg&hash=92074eab8efc3a39aed3aaa129b305961160cd26)

We started on the drivers side, after inspection they didn't look overly bad but changed them for the new parts anyway.

Then the passenger side..... deary me we had to do a double take to make sure it was the same car, extremely warn and hardly anything left on the pad, the disk had grooves, a big lip and looked in a real bad way. once we got the carrier off and whipped the pads out it appeared the seal on the piston had came out.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F90CF1BB7-4379-4DEB-9DEB-4C7630741068.jpg&hash=9e81764c559701455acad64a789f1257cf25ad68)

We doctored it the best we could and ended having to wind the piston back in using the breaker bar due to how far it had come out.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FA64CD61D-7B23-49D2-86E1-C180EAD19550.jpg&hash=f022e2b2fcd5acb090f1d843fa841132436fb515)

I then decided after looking at the calipers they could also do with a freshen up, I popped down the local hardware shop and picked up some red hammerite.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F428C9D2C-C076-44FA-8E14-FF8F81E7AD3E.jpg&hash=eb866f0f1947f46d01598f3bb166c8d8d611ba9b)

I know for proper job these should be properly stripped down etc but for a quick freshen up they dont look to bad at all.

The next day my brother had to borrow my car to get to work as his integra was in for a new timing chain, he rings me saying hes had to pull over as he could smell burning and surprise surprise it was coming from that passenger side caliper, it had seized on and as expected got extremely hot.
When he got to work he mentioned it to one of the techs and fair play to him he got it in the work shop on his dinner break and fitted me a new one but unfortunately it was a silver one as this was a bit cheaper.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FBB50FBF5-5228-4EC5-87B9-8DE8D55156DA.jpg&hash=e59f04ccc73e7b3840c06cde234479a4f271bcc1)
so yes the day after having already done all 4 calipers it was back up in the air as I needed to paint this one.

Breaks are now great and handbrake is a lot better!

Car looks stunning after the detail, super glossy, really nice mods too.

Calipers look great all painted up, hopefully going to do mine this week!

That mk7 is nuts! Like the red lip on the audi rotor wheels.

Thanks Chris, happy with its progress  :happy2:

I couldn't believe the difference a quick lick over the calipers actually made, looks a lot fresher behind the wheels.

Hes currently changed those LTD edition RS3 wheels for some Scirocco VWR ones and omg slightly jealous  not bad for his 'winter wheels' are they haaa

thanks

A few weeks ago my friend called me whilst we were in traffic and asked if I had my brakes on because my center brake light was near enough non-visible in daylight.
After searching through the forum I saw it was a common problem on the Mk5's and found a couple of how to guides so thought why not give it a go!

Same again my brother comes into it and picks me up a genuine light clusters from work, this was around the £35 mark.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FC4E3A932-ED8C-4760-875C-5E298FB98B57.jpg&hash=1555184bce25cec1828ece361b4d9b4fc3032274)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FB959304D-CB9D-43A8-A496-D791166DE09F.jpg&hash=327a8e6010e443d38ba2b632506f8671d6bc1aad)

Tools used:
- Small Flat Head Screw Driver
- Plastic Trim Tools (amazon)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F30A4F172-45D6-4FBF-8F66-D21FEA3A41A5.jpg&hash=198699cd7a15382eca5e0360ae73c9ff72d2d439)

First of all I looked around the brake light cluster and on the left hand side the paint looked slightly disturbed as if someone fancied a go previously, I thought this would be a good place to start to save disturbing the other side.

- I used a flat head screw driver as the trim tools didn't seem sturdy enough to initiate the break of the lense.
Quick picture of the first piece of lense broken, you can see by the disturbed paint where I started on the left hand side
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F09876DEE-042C-49E8-94E3-32B9F7107D8E.jpg&hash=0d329c55965d5f0219b3e20528090c5c022198bf)

- I then proceeded to remove the rest of the red lense using a trim tool, there is no nice way of doing this so you will hear some funny noises (As stated in the link be aware of pieces of plastic  as they have a tendensy to ping off in all direction)

- Once all the lense has been removed you will be presented with the led light cluster
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F77DB93CB-B905-42B6-9D57-37843E5C99BF.jpg&hash=7e56bbd90eb9900145f14bf21edd888286313728)

- I then used a trim tool to pry the led strip out (there's x2 small wires going to the rear of the led strip,I just pulled these off as they were no long required)

- I then followed the guide to removing the black casing, this is held on by x2 retaining clip on each side and takes abit of prying from different areas.

- Once pried out the retaining clips stay in place and can be unhooked as they are also no longer needed
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FE83D735A-0996-478E-B77B-18C533CBA1C1.jpg&hash=3fcae67e74bee0225f5241c0fc9dc8e638a0705b)

- The old light cluster will now be hanging as its still connected by a connector in the spoiler.

- If you follow the wire into the spoiler you will see the wire goes into a rubber grommet, I used a flat head screw driver to pry the grommet out, gently pull the grommet out of the spoiler and the connector will follow.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F271F07BC-0A4B-40D7-A4AC-120D95AC5684.jpg&hash=0bb888789a3baba8dcb9d3d3c346770a0961b539)

- You then need to disconnect the old light cluster (self explanatory the little block move to the side and then releases the car hard wiring).
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FCCC91D3C-1C1D-4CE9-8937-7E00E6EB8AEC.jpg&hash=1f74f7ee56747d11b0581ff0adec14f2410c8005)

This is now the old light cluster removed and now a case of reversing the last few steps;

- Connect the new light into the wiring of the car.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FBADDEE91-4193-4CE3-A429-83CB9C6F1814.jpg&hash=9cc0781a38fe60427dbeb63177a64ef7160cba3d)

- Push the rubber grommet back in and feed any excess wire back into the spoiler.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2F29B756F9-4B6F-44D9-A2CA-A4A1D873AA4F.jpg&hash=18d13f8a6027973909646bd3ea9eef0261fe128d)

- You now have the choice on whether to put some silicone of some sort on the light to hold it in however Ive just used the clips and it seems more than sturdy.
Then the finished article.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagejack_2008%2FMobile_Uploads%2FF4658708-B7B2-4E2F-810E-77FF89C15F41.jpg&hash=60bb5f7982b1712832655547b7dcc725256d6aa4)

Thanks
