Hey guys I have a 2005 axx mk5 golf gti and have a few small issues.
The car was fine when I bought it some 6 months ago and I ran my Vag-com on it to check for faults. It threw a fault 001089 - EVAP Emission Control Sys so I changed it for a new one and re ran the fault finder.
Then recently I noticed a tiny amount of milky oil in the filler cap but non on the dip stick. The water level had dropped very slightly too. So I cleaned the milky oil and topped up the water and all was well.
Then I noticed a small puff of smoke when I hit the gas hard but the power seems fine. Ive also noticed little black soot like dots on my hatch back so im confused what it might all be?
thanks in advance for any help guys.

It's common to get a bit of 'mayo' on the oil cap around this time of year. Cold weather does it. As long as the dipstick's clean like you say, it's nothing to panic about in itself, but you shouldn't be using any coolant. Keep an eye on the level.
It's also quite normal to get those black specs from the exhaust. Maybe moreso on a tuned TFSI to some extent. My rear end is often covered with them, and the AFR is bang on, as are emissions.

hi and thanks for the reply. Never really noticed the soot spots on the hatch when I first bought it. Its sometimes on the rear hatchback window too (only few spots)
but what about small puff of smoke when I accelerate?
im thinking to take it to my local garage to do a pressure test on it and also check the turbo for oil leaks..
so you say its normal?

The puff of smoke... might be something. These cars can smoke a tiny bit without it necessarily indicating an issue, but I wouldn't want to tell you it's fine as there may well be something going on.
But yeah, take it in for a look. Ideally the garage you use will have VCDS and therefore be able to spot something that another diagnostic system might not - and also be able to run some live data logging if needed.
Don't panic about it though. There's nothing you've said that really rings alarm bells, but it'll be wise to get a professional opinion.

Is the car using/burning oil when you check the dipstick?
-
Not sure. Possible a small amount but cant really tell. ive run Vag-com and it only threw up the evap code. changed the evap

my mk5 use to let out big clouds of smoke and was using oil changed the pcv valve and problem was solved

Ive just pulled out the dip stick with engine running and it started to run rough until I put dip stick back in. Im assuming the PCV valve is working ok as per the online test?

What colour smoke? Black is normal/fine and can just be a slight soot build-up from pootling round etc. Oil smoke is a different matter
All sounds pretty normal to me otherwise. Mayo expected at this time of year, my car gets caked in black soot on the rear, if the water level isn't dropping and there's no other symptoms then it's fine etc.
-
You don't notice the soot on black cars
Keep an eye on the coolant level, these engines don't 'use' any. Next time you're underneath it, check for any coolant witness marks on the engine.

Not necessarily, it's "probably" fine.
Mine passed the test but both the inlet/outlet pipes to the PCV were lined with carbon so only about 50% of the pipe was being used.
Doesn't do any harm to open the bonnet once in a while and have a poke around.

Thanks for info guys. So do we think its normal? Only thing i changed was the evap unit / sensor oh and put a new oem dump valve.

*diverter valve not dump valve.
evap unit wouldn't cause your symptoms so it's not related.
mayo in oil cap is entirely normal. clean it off.
coolant level does drop. I usually put 200mm in mine every 3 - 6 months.
do you normally drive slow and never rev? If so, when you do floor it the odd time you might get some smoke.
If you're getting smoke regularly then check it. I've never had an issue with smoke from my exhaust.
Scanning with VCDS should have shown something.
Sounds to me like your car is absolutely fine, stop worrying and enjoy it!!

200ml every 6 months is a lot.
I put 100ml in every 8 months because the nearside rear corner of my head gasket has a slight weep on the outer coolant jacket. Common on the K04 engines apparently.

I dont do many miles to work and back and its only a few times a floor it (got my son in the back so drive carefully).
Im only worried a little bit due to not wanting to wait untill the mot in july and it failed emissions and mainly because of the soot solatters on hatchback i didnt notice before.

My volume was a total guess, I used more doing long 600km return trips across the country.
Don't need to top up as much with city driving.
