Title: Down on power after cambelt change
Post by: bungle on January 28, 2017, 09:16:38 pm
Hey folks, I had my cambelt changed on my 2.0 TFSI a few weeks ago and ever since I drove it home the car feels like its been robbed of about 50bhp. It starts fine and drives smoothly except for the lack of urge. Throttle response is particularly numb with the bottom end seemingly most affected. I contacted the garage at the time who suggested it might have been the ECU re-calibrating after the battery disconnect but I didn't really buy into this. So any ideas? Could it be that the belt is off by a tooth or would the car also run rough if this was the case? I don't think its a boost leak because the performance is affected throughout the rev range. Also I've no warning lights on.

Cheers for any suggestions you could give me before I go back and confront the guy who did the work!
Matt.

Possibly have fitted the cambelt incorrectly. It only needs to be half a tooth out and you'll lose a substantial amount of power. It happened to mine and had to take it back to the garage and have them re-do it correctly.

VCDS is your friend in this situations.  Following a chain or belt replacement, check measuring blocks 91 and 93.  You're looking for -1KW and 28KW actual and requested respectively.

I honestly find it crazy that mechanics can't time an engine in the 21st century.  There are plenty enough timing marks for alignment.
