Hi Guys
I have a 2007 Golf GTi - BWA engine
So the only mods i have done to it are NGK-R Audi S3 plugs, a Ramair induction kit and a non resonated turbo back with a 200 cell Cat Milltek exhaust
Last monday i got a remap done by a well know tuner,
So the car started at 195 bhp at the flywheel and finished up at a whopping 280.2 bhp,
I am delighted with these figures ........ BUT why am i not enjoying it and here is why,
When I am driving it, I am in 4th 5th or 6th gear at 3000+ rpm and i have a misfire or a sound that is coming from the engine that sounds like the fuel is spitting into the cylinders, its very annoying and i am not getting the potential from this great car as if i give it the boot it struggles to get grip up to 3rd gear (I understand that as the torque is 300fp) but i have no top end speeds with the misfire as i dont want to do damage to a graet healthy engine.
I am wondering has anyone else had this problem and what could i do to rectify this problem??????
All help greatly appreciated
Thanks Seanie

Coilpacks..... change 'em

@Dan_FR What would you recommend???

Standards are fine, R8's if you like red. Both do the same job
-
Ok I am just looking at R8 ones at the moment but you reckon that's my problem

More than likely if they've never been changed. First time I hit boost after map was applied, I had the same symptoms. You need diagnostic kit like VCDS to measure misfires to know for sure
-
Sound job well I have a full service history and there is no history of changing coils and you hardly know the original part number for the R8 coils

Coil packs +1.
Same thing happened to my eddy at APR 1 map.
-
Thanks a million for the replies lads I an going to purchase the R8 coils, has anyone any links or part numbers please.

No it didnt....
It wasnt AMD was it?

"No it didnt" what????

Theres no way it made 280bhp... thats a very optimistic figure.
-
Why didn't it make it?

No it was an Irish company

Ohh ok. 280 is a very high figure for a K03 TFSI engine. Youd need a upgraded HPFP to get anywhere near that figure.
-
No you don't I have a standard hpfp

OK... well in that case it didnt make a true 280bhp then. The Dyno was generous.
Anyway... back to the misfire. Have you not spoken to the place who remapped it?
-
I have spoken to him and he recommended ignition coils

I wasnt doubting that the tuners dyno said 280.... I am simply trying to explain to you that unless you've got a HPFP, you wont be making 280bhp on a dyno that reads correctly. In reality its probably making nearer 270.
-
Just to play devil's advocate @rich83...
My car made 270 with just a full BCS (sport cat) and Pipercross panel down at Hinckley.
Could it have made 10bhp more at peak with a well-flowing intake like a Ramair? Probably. I honestly doubt my Pipercross panel gave much more than a stock filter would.
There's also something worth considering with Seanie's map. If boost is tempered a bit at mid revs, say around 3k, it gives the turbo (mapper) a chance of producing a little more boost at higher revs. Mine made 345lb/ft of torque at 3200rpm, but dropped off a cliff soon after. This map makes considerably less torque at around 3k, but then holds on to the torque much better than mine.
So, it's maybe fairer to say that this car could indeed be making enough torque at high enough revs to make 280bhp peak power, at the expense of that good old k03 punch at low-mid revs.
It's also just as likely that this dyno, or any dyno for that matter, isn't entirely accurate
-
This is my graph. Where Seanie is making peak power - 5800rpm - he's at about 260lb/ft.
At 5800rpm my car produced something like 240lb/ft. A fair chunk less than Seanie's.

Why not just hand the car back to the tuner and say fix it?

Because it isn't the tuner's responsibility to check or fix ignition/fuelling hardware.

@AJP That's was my opinion aswell, he has done his job and has been great with giving advice and help on what to do.
So thanks guys for your advice and I am going to go the route of changing coils first and then I will let ye know how things are going.
Appreciate your help

Thanks for the update!
It's all too often that threads just fizzle out after the problem is solved and no one becomes any the wiser from reading them.
Another win for the forum members :star:
-
Congrats. Now go and enjoy all 280* of those horses....
*Subject to dyno lottery and forum deliberation.

Thanks Guys and don't worry I will

I've just ordered some of those from AKS. I don't have a misfire problem but mine still has the original black coils, so could probably do with a refresh. Good that they fixed your issue!

So, what's the prices of these coil packs?
Ta.
-
200 euro for 4 from Audi

I had all of mine changed for free at VW as part of a recall. Ring your nearest dealer and ask them about it - it should still apply.

Less than 100 quid from aks tuning

Yep, 1p less, inc delivery.
The coils are £40 each from Audi.
-
That's ok if you are living in England but I am in Ireland and they are 155 euro from AKS after I convert it from £ to € and Audi is just beside me so it was just handier from them
