Hey guys first post. I've just bought a mk5 gti and it's got interior rear view and wing mirror dimming mirrors. The problem I've got is it's only on the drivers side. The passenger side just has normal glass. Any idea where I can get the replacement. Cheers.

It's only installed on the drivers side, the passenger doesn't have it, although if your up for the challenge you can retrofit it

Thanks for that info mate. So all gti's came with auto dimming interior and drivers side wing mirror. That's crazy, my 335d did all 3 which was way better. Could the euro spec drivers side mirror from a gti go straight in as if the complete unit was bought it would include the glass and electric components, am I right in thinking this or what.

No. It was an extra as part of a "pack" I believe

Convenience Pack IIRC.

My 05 GTI has both wing mirrors with auto dimming and folding from the factory. The glass often gets changed for standard as it's extremely expensive to replace...
-
To be fair they did put it on both sides from 2004 to 2005 and dropped it to one side after, it was included in luxury pack 2 which included folding, puddle lighted and auto dipping in reverse (2007 ish onwards) mirrors.
Lux pack 1 was just folding no dimming.
Plus if you had reverse sensors from approximately 2007 the mirror dipping on passenger side was included in this.
All years are approx.

If you find a left hand drive gti/r32 with the same glass :happy2:

Si R32. Yeah that's what I was thinking. It's an early 05 with sunroof, xenons, heated leather and the mirrors have puddle lights fitted. I'm going to whip the passenger side glass out and see what's behind there. I'm assuming that it'd have more than the usual 2 wires for heating element.
-
Mine has both mirrors that dim too but I need the drivers side as it's gone yellow where the liquid has gone funny (doesn't dim any more) - I haven't been able to find anything for my side (dealers wanted £230!) but there is this one for nearside you might be interested in: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-left-AUTOMATIC-ANTI-DAZZLE-mirror-glass-1K0857521F-New-genuine-VW/111725232571?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D93b5722a14294d619fdfcfbaf25ae22b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D131933883001

Yep, there will be the usual two heated element wires and an additional black connector for the photochromic glass power source.

That's an expensive piece of glass

Tell me about it. Worth it at night though

Does anyone have a tip for removing the glass? My car is well specked but the mirrors don't de ice themselves. From reading this thread they should?

Does your mirror switch have this wavy icon on it?

To remove the glass just need to push the larger side into the mirror then get your fingers behind the narrow side and just pull it forward.
@SI-R32 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1757) when retrofitting does the auto dimming automatically work or is additional wiring required?

not really as we've survived driving without these gimmicks for years :signLOL:
-
I suppose airbags, seat belts, crumple zones etc are all gimmicks as well!

True. More of a nice convenience to have rather than a must, wing mirrors themselves on the other hand. Very practical.

whos talking about the safety features here?, this mirror is just a addition extra that's not even compulsory or a safety feature!.
-
On a lighter note, I checked the left side mirror housing and the extra connection for auto dimming is there, happy days. This car is a nice spec, I'm really chuffed.

Same!
It's only taken me 2.5 years to notice I have a button on my rear view mirror to dim the glare
