Hi guys just looking for some advice my oil can light came on yeterday evening when i started the car, topped it up to the correct level but the yellow oil light will not turn off on the dash,is this a common occurance and is it a tricky fix.
Thanks
Eoin
Ps its an 06 mk5 gti

If it was low and needed topping up and the light now won't go off, there's sometimes a problem with the bonnet catch sensor. Open the bonnet and see if the light for an open door comes on on the dash to check it's working. There's also an oil level sensor that sometimes can fail, but it's less common.
Bonnet catch sensor can just be cleaned carefully

Thanks for the advice i will try those items you have pointed out and see how i get on ie cleaning the bonnet catch and checking the dash to see if its indicating the bonnet is open
-
The issue is when the bonnet sensor doesn't recognise that the bonnet has been opened and then closed i.e. so the oil has been checked and topped up.

Hi Dan_fr thanks for the reply yes i topped the car up yesterday so all is good there i will look at it afterwork today hopefully its not much of an issue

I can't decide if that's clever, or daft, since the sump has a sensor in it! Or is it just an oil 'condition' sensor, rather than level?

So my dash board reading is not telling me the bonnet is open so it must be a faulty sensor there by that process of elimination, does anybody no the part no. and approx price for this sensor?

part no; 1k1823509e look for lock with sensor attached, found mine on ebay genuine vw part about £50.

May also just need cleaning, that are is often covered in old grease which dirt sticks to. Worth giving it a quick spray with WD40 to strip out the old grease and dirt first before getting the parts replaced.
