Title: Is this a straight swap for my standard one?
Post by: spwd on February 07, 2017, 03:31:12 pm
Hi guys, I've got the standard stereo with 6 disc built in and looking to get an mfd2 (I think that's what it is) I've seen that some have a separate 6 disc (which ones?)

So I can get this pretty cheap but don't want to get it if it's going to be a p.i.t.a?

Shouldn't be any issues with that mate. The MFD2 is a '2nd gen' headunit, so the same generation as an RCD300 (the crappy bog standard thing) just with better features.

All the issues you hear about battery drain and that kind of thing usually come from fitting a 3rd gen unit (RNS510 etc) in place of a 2nd gen unit on cars (usually pre 2007) with an older can gateway. But it's nothing that can't be worked around.

What headunit exactly have you got?

What new features would you like?

And have you considered a 3rd gen such as an RCD510, RNS510 etc?

Thanks for the reply bud, this is mine below, I believe the mfd2 has sat nav which is what I'd like, I can't afford the new ones which I'd love to get but I can hopefully get this one for £50px.

I just wasn't sure if we could just swap the head unit and that's it, he's selling his car so thought I'd ask and he said yes if I take it out and obviously put mine in his.

I'm not sure if it'd need coding in (or further physical work) to get it all working properly with the nav etc.

There are quite a few bods on here with much better knowledge of this kind of thing than me. Hopefully someone can clarify things for you.

As long as it's doable and I can just plug mine into his and it'll work that's fine, I can always fiddle about my end

@spwd (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4339) yep it's a straight swap. Just make sure you get a GPRS dongle with it and place it somewhere high on the unit (I put mine inside the top dash vent).

I did this change (moving from the RCD300 to MFD2) before eventually moving to a RNS510 and updated the can gateway. Main thing I miss about the MFD2 was that I could fast forward tracks with my multi function steering wheel buttons which I can't do with the RNS installed!

Thanks bud, is the dongle thingy attached to the stereo or? I saw one for sale and it said does not include antenna, is this a sat nav thing or was this other guy talking about something both units have.

Sorry for what are probably simple questions lol.

@spwd (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4339) the antenna is what I meant lol it attaches to the back of the stereo then you just mount it somewhere you can pick up a GPS signal. They are pretty cheap I think I paid about £5 for mine off eBay
