So I've been having a dodgy outside temp display on the dash recently. I got a local auto electrician to come and have a quick look at the car. He said basically the problem could be anywhere from the instrument cluster to the wiring through the dash and the engine. He suggested wiggling the wires and see when the temp reading starts to go crazy (as the fault is intermittent, and ive noticed it go funny when going over bumps).
What i've done is hooked up VCDS, ran the advanced measuring blocks for the ambient temperature and started wiggling all the wires from the sensor up to around the battery area. What I did notice is that the temp starts to drop when I shut the bonnet!
It turns out when I hit the top of the dash above the instrument cluster I get a drop in temp,.
What are my options for getting the cluster sorted? I hear ecu testing can test and refurbish the cluster but that's gonna be over 200 quid. Are there any other options?
thanks!

It might be an issue with the cluster harness where it connects at the back, or a dry joint on a pin. You could probably check and confirm that yourself if you're handy with a soldering iron.

Could be a good time to upgrade to highline cluster if the cluster is faulty? Will be cheaper than ecu testing sorting it out for you.

Thanks guys.
I'll take out the cluster and have a look.
With regards to installing the highline cluster. Can I do all the programming via vcds? I'm sure I read something about needing a device to program the mileage? Could be wrong!

To transfer the immobiliser data and correct mileage you will need Vag commander cable, VCDS will reset the error codes that will come up after you swap the clusters from midline to highline.

great - thanks!
My dash is 1K6 920 962 so I assume i'd need 1K6 920 972 highline?
If i just wanted to swap it for another 962 off ebay, do I need to look for a DSG version or are manuals and DSG the same cluster?
thanks!

You can get any highline but 970,971 and 972 are easier to code yourself.
It doesn't have to be specific to your transmission. The cluster will adapt its display itself
Check the highline i have in for sale section if interested
