Title: Right rear wheel is HOT
Post by: GTICZ on February 19, 2017, 11:42:36 am
Hi guys, my brake problem (ftp://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,110705.0.html) is maybe caused by problem on right rear wheel... when i drive even 100km on highway without braking, three wheels are cold and just this one is hot, i couldn't let my hand on the disc.

I changed or done:
- new brake pipe Textar
- new caliper from TRW in red
- pads are freely moving to sides
- try disconnect handbrake line on this wheel
- bearing has no play
- new brakefluid, but pedal now has a little bit longer way then before

RR wheel when i brake harder is locking up first, so abs is involved..

now i have no idea what to do next, or check..
is there someone who could give me a good idea, please?!

Not sure if this is the cause - but is your calipers sticking by any chance?

Does the wheel rotate freely when up in the air?

Have you tried greasing the slider pins ?

Guarantee this is the issue.

Could be intermittent so even jacking it up and rotating the wheel might not prove it. It could be fine now but will stick the odd time.

Change the caliper, while you're at it change the other one too

Wheel bearing on the way out?

thank You guys for answers!

when wheel is up on jack stand, its moving freely and almost without friction. slider pins are greased, everythink is moving good without no effort, brake caliper is new, also seems to be without problem.

last chance im thinking of is switch discs between sides..  then maybe abs unit still gives pressure to the wheel? i think, it will be doing this all the time, not just on the ground.. just thinking

but what will cause sticking caliper when wheel is on the ground?  i tried disconnect handbrake, still same.

do you mean calipers on both sides??

I had a similar issue and first a wheel bearing was on it's way out then both calipers need replacing. If it's the bearing you will start to hear a grinding noise going at certain speeds.

My calipers were gone as it was constantly squeaking and my brakes were not as strong at all.

i dont think it's a bearing wheel, there is no play and no noise.. but i noticed that brake power is probably stronger on this wheel, cause it has tendency to block first, so abs start kicking and then is no such power brake force... :(

so i have to find out why is sticking when is on the ground

A slightly bent pin can cause the caliper to intermittnelty stick which was my problem. It only heated up the wheel once every few weeks.

It's not an expensive fix so you can either refurbish them with new slide pins or else replace.

i check pins, they seems to be straight.. but i will try switch with the other side.. just give it a try... and these four are all the same, is that correct? cause e.g. on audi a3 8l are different on top and bottom, so just for sure:)

is there any other chance what would it be when pins won't solve it? :(

thanks a lot for helping

hi guys, i still did not solve it. last time, i did not switch anything, just tried measure rotor's woble, but only on one side.. by eye rotor is ok, with woble staf in one line was little bigger then on rest of rotor.. 0,02 vs. 0,04mm if i did that properly..
i dont have much time for that now :(

Hi guys,

it seems to be solved. I've noticed, that caliper on the other side had big play on the slide pins, about 0,5-1cm, because piston retracted too far back inside and also handbrake was able take up to the max.. so left wheel were still moving while right was braking already - in the air i cannot turn with right wheel, but left still freely moving..
I hope, now it will be okay:)

Sweet sunday to all :)

Glad to know it's all sorted and it's also a good idea to post the solution for others who might see this post down the line.
