What's the size of the oil filter housing on the GTI? Is it 38 or 40mm? Any help appreciated
-
I think it's a 36mm socket.
-
Can anyone confirm? Tried a 36 today and it wouldnt fit?

Yep, 36mm

As above, 36mm shallow socket designed for oil filters. I have one of these:

I ordered one of those sockets last night.
Also one of these looks like it will be useful

There worse than useless, i threw mine in the bin after the second attempt to use it :fighting:

Ahh.. thats a shame. the 'OEM' one works great and its made out of metal, but pricey

Par for the course with ebay shat
To be fair, I just shove an allen key into the orange nipple, lift it up and move it over so it rests on what ever is inside there, and wait for it to drain out. No hardship really. I just thought this gadget might speed the process up, but sounds like it's a more of a hindrance than a help!
Does the tube get air locked or something, or does the screw in bit just not lift the nipple up, or something?

£151....ouch

Yeah it airlocks, 45 minutes waiting for it to drain, undo it and get covered in oil.
Maybe that's the problem it doesn't screw up enough to really push into the nipple, happened to me twice, so in the bin in went :angry015:

Oh well, if that happens, that is the feedback I shall be leaving on ebay then

I can't seem to get the oil filter housing off mine at all. I have a 36mm socket!!
Any tips for one that is stuck fast in there? Have ordered a replacement just in case alsp
-
I did mine a couple of weeks ago and for some reason the 36mm I thought it would be wouldn't fit, so I had to nip to halfords and bought a 38mm one and worked fine :happy2:

It's probably been over tightened. Very common. You'll need a breaker bar to get enough torque to crack it free. Just as well you have a new one because over tightened ones often break upon removal!

£151!?!
Unbelievable!
I'll get some more rags then....
-
i just used a big phillips head screw driver and pushed the valve in then re-seated it afterwards....
i think i'd do that again and keep the £150
-
Yep, that's all I've ever done without any problems.

Got a new standard for £27 on eBay yesterday

Will be a replica/chinese special for that price I imagine?
New genuine is over £100
-
You don't actually have to drain the oil filter housing before removing it but it probably helps to prevent oil spillage.

This is the one I ordered http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142258631812

The gti has a paper filter inside the housing? I ordered a Bosch filter from ecp and it's not a paper filter but A metal screw on one.. will this still fit and is it correct?
-
No, you need a paper one.
-
Yeah you ordered the wrong one

As above, 36mm shallow socket designed for oil filters. I have one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/320959798246
TBH I hadn't realised there was such a thing! Thanks for linky!
I Ordered the 3/8" drive Sealy version (also slightly cheaper!) From
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121755523240?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Has arrived and quality etc aok.
Figured as I had been using a 36mm 3/4 drive impact socket i was already well tooled up for any stuck housings :signLOL:
And my new one will be v considerably easier to work with overhead!
-
You can shop around on ebay and get it for the same price. The one I originally posted was the first result. Can't remember which actual link i purchased though as it was years ago
