Like a twonk I didn't note down the long coding on my old steering module and now I'm having difficulty resetting the heavy steering. I've tried the turning the wheel trick but it doesn't work. Can someone with a manual gti and ch module scan and give me their long coding string please?
Thanks
-
Have you just turned the wheel lock to lock or followed the adaptation process?
-
Not followed the adaptation process.
-
It will be the adaption process I'd say, PITA, it took me 3 times before it sorted. If you moved the slip ring then you need to re adapt
-
I'm getting no feedback from the steering angle sensor in the measuring block.
-
U need to login to the module using code 40168 and then do basic settings on 60,63 and 66. Login each time before doing basic settings. And then go for a drive and then do the full lock left, right and Straighten steering.

Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes.
:happy2:
-
It's the long coding for the mk60 esp/abs unit I need as well...
-
I do have an autoscan of the old steering module but that doesn't include the long coding for the abs does it?
-
you dont really need the long coding from anything, just use VCDS to log in to the module and apply basic settings on the 3 channels I mentioned earlier. :)
-

Is that in 16-steering wheel or 44-steering assist? When I try security code 40168 in 16 it says Controller refused the key, error 35: invalid key
-
I've got a power steering fault code as well.
-
u need to do it on abs brakes module
-
For steering assist basic settings (done via abs) to work, there needs to be no errors in your 03 - abs module.
If there are errors in abs, the basic settings on steering assist will appear to be accepted but basic settings will not stick and warning lights on dash will remain.

The power steering fault is incorrect settings or something. The horn doesn't work either?
My intention was swapping over from an AQ module to a CH as the cruise control doesn't work with AQ [I only found this out after I bought it].
I originally swapped over from my midline [factory fitted] swcm so I could make use of the mfsw buttons I bought. I'm very tempted to say sod it to the idea of mfsw and go back to my midline swcm - at least the cruise control was working with that.
I didn't save the scan at the time but from memory I think it was this code:
01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500)
01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
Possible Causes
When found in Brake Electronics (MK60)
Incorrect Steering Aid Characteristic Setting
Incorrect Steering Aid Warning Lamp Setting
Driver Steering Recommendation (DSR) in activated in Brake Electronics but not in the Steering Aid Control Module or vice versa.
Possible Solutions
When found in Brake Electronics (MK60)
Check Brake Electronics Coding
Check Steering Aid Characteristic Setting
Check Steering Aid Warning Lamp Setting
Check Driver Steering Recommendation (DSR) Setting
Which is the correct setting for the DSR and where do I find it in the swcm?
Bloody minefield!! and I've collected 3 modules now!!! :sad1:
-
I had the same issue the other week @RetroRaz (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6494) helped me out big time... I ended up with an abs test mode fault.... driving at 13mph and turning steering wheel between 90-180 was a PITA.... 5am Tesco empty car park did the trick.
-
Right, got a bit further,
Managed to get the steering to lighten up, still got fault codes in the abs module however, as follows:
Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 1K0-907-379-MK60-F.lbl
Control Module Part Number: 1K0 907 379 Q HW: 1K0 907 379 Q
Component and/or Version: ESP FRONT MK60 0102
Software Coding: 0004738
Work Shop Code: WSC 01279 785 00200
3 Faults Found:
01486 - System Function Test Activated
000 - -
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500)
008 - Implausible Signal
The ABS, ESP and TPMS lights are also lit up.
Is it safe to drive as it is? :scared:
-
I think you have the same error code as mine and it needs a dealer reset.
My steering works fine with no dash mil lights.
-
can't understand why it will of need a dealer reset, been through the swcm swap process several times before and it's always been fine.
-
01486 - System Function Test Activated
000 - -
This is ok, once all other errors are sorted, we can deal with this one by the completing the test. Don't worry about it for now...
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
This one is due to steering angle and also steering limit stop basic settings needed. Details on Ross tech for the mk60 abs.
However, I don't think you will be able to clear it while you have the 01309 error.
01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500)
008 - Implausible Signal
This will be the cause of your problems.
I would remove and refit and check that all connections are definitely in place.
Also, is the steering module coded in 44 steering assist? If not, this might be cause of your problems.
If your horn doesn't work and steering wheel buttons do not light up, either there is a connection problem or a coding issue.
Other option is to disconnect battery for 20mins and try again .
The ABS, ESP and TPMS lights are also lit up.
It's ok to drive but be aware, your power steering may not function and braking may not be as good, abs may kick in when breaking at traffic lights, junctions etc

Push and hold both your ABS/ESP and TPMS buttons together. Hold them down for about 5 seconds. You should hear a 'bong' sound and the lights will go out.
-
On steering wheel module coding there are options for the LIN version as this module supports both v1 and v2.
If you have the wrong coding, it could cause a communication issue.
-
If your horn doesn't work and steering wheel buttons do not light up, either there is a connection problem or a coding issue.
Jas
Thanks again for your help
See this is the thing, the horn and the buttons aren't working, but the buttons do light up.
Matt

In the past I had loss of button function and loss of horn and it was faulty buttons
-
In the past I had loss of button function and loss of horn and it was faulty buttons
I wonder if its because I'm trying to use the old type [pre 2005.5] buttons with a newish generation [CH] steering wheel control module?
-
Before you start worrying about the buttons, lets check a few things.
Ive been out to my car and got a few screen shots for you, a few things to try to narrow this down:
First, goto module 16 - Steering.
Measuring blocks. Check group 6.
This should confirm if there is communication with the module:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fax_jas%2FVCDS%2F23-02-2017_18-07-01_zpsaq9zshl5.png&hash=3f72aaea7a010a8b0f16f3be0901282ce1b7c452)
Next, check group 4.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fax_jas%2FVCDS%2F23-02-2017_18-11-09_zpsphz2zcmf.png&hash=de193a14a24c46e9809d77d7412c641601373933)
Turn the steering wheel while monitoring group 4.
You will probably find that the steering angle DOES NOT change wheel you turn the wheel.
It should, but isnt due to the issue we are trying to solve.
Now goto basic settings in module 44 - Steering Assist.
Check group 7.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fax_jas%2FVCDS%2F23-02-2017_18-10-00_zpscjiyab47.png&hash=5463649c6a014a27c14b1277c62f1e87add2ce46)
Here you should have 'Basic Setting' and 'Init'.
This should say 'OK' and 'Steering Ang Init' which means basic settings are ok and the G85 is initialised.
Yours will most likely say 'NOT OK' and 'Not Init'
Now, I suspect coding may be part of the problem.
Still in module 16 - Steering, check the coding:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fax_jas%2FVCDS%2F23-02-2017_18-05-39_zps4by8dple.png&hash=753c116a49f919c6c0b600c06ea6b1af48dffd45)
Steering module supports old and new communication (LIN) versions.
This is why the CH module is popular as it supports both Mk5 and Mk6 MFSW.
Hover over the coding box and the bubble will appear, giving you the options:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fax_jas%2FVCDS%2F23-02-2017_18-05-11_zps08t6jrre.png&hash=0da69b4a993b95cbd8473e0025934362c0daff5e)
Pay attention to the 5th digit (0xxx?xx: Multi-Function Steering Wheel):
This is where you tell the car which communication the module is to use:
options 1 to 4 = LIN 1.3 (If you are fitting a Mk5 MFSW)
options 5 to 8 = LIN 2.0 (If you are fitting a Mk6 MFSW)
0xxx?xx: Multi-Function Steering Wheel
0 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel not installed
1 or 5 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel w/o Tiptronic and w/o Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
2 or 6 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel with Tiptronic and no Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
3 or 7 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel w/o Tiptronic and with Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
4 or 8 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel with Tiptronic and with Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
For example, if you are fitting a Mk5 MFSW, with manual gear box ando do not have PTT (voice control), select 1.
My coding is '0000532'.
I have Mk6 MFSW, Manual, Cruise control, button on wiper stalk, No PTT.
So, take a note of your existing coding and check it is correct.
If not update it and see if it sorts out the communication issue.
Report back and we can go from there.

Has it worked? Was it coding? :)

No haven't tried it yet, just appreciate the lengths you're going to to help a stranger. I'll let you know.

Ok, I was about to 'air punch' then.... I'll save it ;)
Keep us posted.
I had an issue with mine last week so know how frustrating it is trying to decipher what VCDS is trying to tell you.

Just weighing in here to say Fair Play to Jas for the awesome replies to try and help MPS!! :happy2:
It's helpful replies like Jas's that make mk5golfgti.co.uk such a brilliant resource!!
Fair Play lads  :happy2:
And of course I hope you get sorted Jas.... I've had similar issues to youin the past an they're a PAIN!!
-
HELL YEAH BWOIS!!! ALL DASH LIGHTS GONE!! :driver: :happy2:   :congrats: :jumpmove: :jumping: :drinking:
The story goes like this:
The coding was one digit out on the steering wheel module: I've got an older version of vagcom so I didn't realise there was 2 settings depending on which version of LIN you have, v1.3 or v2.0. My coding was 0000134. [Mk5 MFSW]
and a bonus is my mute button works for the first time ever now!!! After having the mfsw buttons for a year. Small point but always bugged me haha. The source button directly underneath it has never worked though, I think it was only designed to work with the mfd2 and rcd300, if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know!
Found a reasonably deserted mini[ish] roundabout with just the right radius to enable me to complete the esp initialisation, the 90 to 180 degree thing is reasonably easy to do following the youtube how to vid. The hardest part is finding a deserted roundabout of just the right size.
Now the strange part, all dash lights gone, full autoscan done on vcds, no error codes, except one - the original power steering J500 fault code is stubbornly refusing to clear? It is exactly the same code as in my previous posts.
Apart from that, it is fine.
Thanks again for your help folks
Matt :drinking:
-
Beauty! Glad you got it sorted. :)
'Air punch'
-
Strange how that J500 code wont go away though?
-
I'm going to try changing the following setting from +0000002 to +0000006.
My car was made around 2005.5 so around the changeover point.
Frontbrakes (Sensor Cluster OLD):
+0000005 = FS III 54 15" (PR-1ZF/1ZM/1ZC)
+0000006 = FN III 54 15"/16" (PR-1ZE/1LJ/1ZP/1ZD/1LL)
+0000009 = FRNG 57 17" (PR-1LK)
Frontbrakes (Sensor Cluster NEW):
+0000001 = FS III 54 15" (PR-1ZF/1ZM/1ZC)
+0000002 = FN III 54 15"/16" (PR-1ZE/1LJ/1ZP/1ZD/1LL)
+0000008 = FRNG 57 17" (PR-1LK)
-
I don't think that coding will be related to the J500, although worth I try.
So, I'm not sure the j500 is related to the SWCM, or you may have blown a fuse while installing the new module?
Goto module 19-CAN Gateway, Measuring Blocks > Group - 152
Field 2 should display the CAN-Bus status of the J500-Power Steering Control Module.
You should see a 1.
If you see a 0 then there is a communication issue between the CAN-Bus and the J500, which may indicate a broken wire.
Then, check fuses.
Engine bay, Fuse 3 (110-amp) (terminal 30)].
And there is a black wire from fuse 3 to J500, check that for breaks if you can.
Check driver's side fuse box, fuse 15 also, this gives ignition power to j500 I think.
Jas
-
Jas, the reason why I'm thinking it's merely a coding issue and not comms is the vcds fault is "Implausible Signal" rather than "No Communication" or "Faulty"
Although that doesn't quite fit right as with any of them rosstech says you'd expect the MIL light to be on, which it isn't.
I'll try the coding tweak tomorrow and let you know!
So what actual part is the J500? Is it integrated into the steering wheel module?
-
You're right, I would have expected a red or amber power steering light to be on.
It may be that some basic settings need doing somewhere?
J500 is the power steering control module.
Do you have any faults in module 16 (steering wheel) or 44 (steering assist)?
-

J500 is the power steering control module.
So where is that physically on the car? Just curious.
Do you have any faults in module 16 (steering wheel) or 44 (steering assist)?
No, none!! Weird, eh?
-
So where is that physically on the car? Just curious.
I think the module is directly mounted on the power steering rack.
The steering rack is mounted on the subframe, close to the anti roll bar.
-
J500 is the error code I've got which I've been told needs a dealer calibration of the steering rack
-
I'm basically having the same problem installed a MK6 GTI MFSW I have the steering wheel tyre pressure and traction control lights on the dash. Weird thing is I have power steering when I'm idling in Park but as soon as I put it into D and start driving I lose my power steering. Taking the car to a specialist tomorrow to have my highlines coded in so hopefully he'll be able to sort the steering wheel to.
I will update tomorrow once I've picked the car up

Kai, do you have VCDS? Your issue is probably coding and basic settings for steering angle / steering limit etc
For dsg cars there is also the longitudinal acceleration sensor to be set.
Are you getting the J500 error?

Took it to my friend who has VCDS today and all the faults got cleared accept for the steering ones like assisted power steering but I can't remember 100% what they were. I just know two of them weren't clearing. We were really close to fixing it as we followed all the advice in this thread and it was just something near the end we couldn't get right
Sorry i'm not that clued up on VCDS so where would I find the settings for the longitudinal acceleration that needs to be set ?
-
Kai, start your own thread and we can help you in there, otherwise we will lose sight of MPS's issue.
Jas
-
I've cleared the J500 code!! It appears to have been caused by "driver steering recommendation" being turned off in module 44-Steering Assist adaptation channels :happy2:
Also, something else I can't get my head around, in 03-ABS Brakes adaptation, channel 1 is set to Tire Pressure - 16 inch? There are 3 values you can select, 0 - 15 inch, 1 - 16 inch and 2 - 16 inch? Confusing and I'm guessing it has nothing to do with 18" wheels?
Also channel 9 is set to 'brake assist - center', the other possible settings are small and 2 large?
Cheers

I think no 2 may be a typo in the label file and is probably for 18".
I'll check mine and let you know

I've found the fault code doesn't delete but not sure why apart from replacing the steering rack.
Steering wheel is showing 0
ABS is the only thing showing weird readings
I haven't checked the fuses but will do that on my next outing to the car if that makes a difference

Your J500 fault is slightly different. Check module 19 measuring blocks as mentioned earlier, that will confirm communication status of j500 with the can gateway.
-
hi, didn't you say module 16 earlier in the post and if so it's all fine and gives the software versions too @jason_rmh (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4481)

Well oops. It appears my messing has caused a problem with the horn - it only works when pressed on the left hand side! I've unclipped the airbag again to have a look if I've caught any wires putting it back and it looks like I've pinched one of the single wires with a spade connector on the end. Are these ground wires?
Any ideas @jason_rmh (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4481) ?

I just swapped a 12-button MK6 Golf steering wheel in place of my 8-button MK5 Golf steering wheel. The swap went well, and all 12 buttons work. My issue is that the horn button does not work. I had swapped over the steering wheel control module from the stock ***AQ model to the ***CD model as it supports lin 1.3 and 2.0. I also replaced my old revision-C clock-spring with a new one as I wanted to ensure I had no wiring issues due to a previous airbag related fault in my old steering wheel (which appears to have now gone). I didn't make any coding changes to the new steering wheel control module, as I noticed a new fault in some modules about not being able to see the steering angle sensor (although the steering assistance "feels" fine). I had disconnected the main battery during the swap since I was replacing the driver's airbag.
Here is the AUTOSCAN after the swap with the new steering wheel and second-hand control module with airbag (however horn does not work).
