Title: Modified engine cover
Post by: NeilM on January 29, 2010, 11:33:17 am
Although loosing the engine cover to fit the Forge CIA & Catch can didnt really bother me I saw a second hand engine cover for sale and thought I'd have a go at cutting and fitting it.

Second hand cover.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F1start.jpg&hash=346025fd77e2e37e128c9bfd4fe6207fac4ca241)

dont need these bits.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F2cut.jpg&hash=82a19febb9ba23fa4732199d3c15cb5988612598)

Also retained the 2 front fixing points.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F3Cut-out.jpg&hash=032d76c62a1c1c024cdbba7a0505213c6398b86e)

Had to make good the cut right hand end and formed a recess for a VW badge.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F4Recess.jpg&hash=5ba59bcaa7236d5960e8ec4884148dfdc89baf84)

Ended up smoothing out all the edges and painted Satin black

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F5all-black.jpg&hash=022e988a409cf56aeef732d8d3998a30ddaba63d)

I've seen somebody use the middle section of the engine cover on a new carbon cover so I tried this.

Think I prefer it with the white centre.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F7fitted.jpg&hash=86530d3c7c148de364f69075fdf4790f45a59515)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo163%2Fneilmelvin%2F8fitted.jpg&hash=b5cc0da2960ec7112987ad66f3c0b567444598ed)

Another option was to wrap it in carbon which I could still do.

What do you think??

Neil

looks awesome neil. not a fan of not running the engine cover on the
eddy engine due to intakes!

well worth the effort! ;)

Looks very good Neil.  So much better than bare, and looks far more OEM than the EVOMS offering.

Very good

Great looking Mod Neil. :happy2:

I'd only change one thing and that would be to spray the lettering in silver to stand out a little from the white :happy2:

I wouldn't wrap it in CF as it may shrink/peel/bubble/wrinkle with the heat.

....

Looks great, Neil. Would look even more oem if you hadn't filled the moulded top.

I thought of doing the same but GTIjames very generously gave me his EVOMS which I'm repairing and am able to fit my carbon centre strip on.

If I don't like the result I'll do what you have except not fill it in. The oem cover, even just the top part, is surprisingly heavy.

Your post is a great guide for cutting down the stock cover and I probably wouldn't even have considered the EVOMS if I'd seen what you did earlier.

Great work  :congrats:

I'm going to be adapting an S3 engine cover to fit with my intake soon as well.  Just having a bit of trouble sourcing one at the moment.

Awesome mod

I think different coloured lettering would make the letters stand out even more. Otherwise love the finish.

I have a roll of 2/2 Twill Carbon Fibre sheet (left over from another job) and high temp Resins good for 160 Degrees C, should be OK for Skinning a part in an engine bay.

Fancy doing another now youv'e had the practice?

The problem is a new engine cover is about £200, I got a second hand one for £50 but there going to be rare. Buy the time you add labour and parts its going to be dear.

I was thinking however that I could make a mould from what I've got and use it to laminate carbon fibre engine covers, I'd just have to work out how to fix them as you would have lost the OEM fixing points.

Watch this space  :happy2:

What sort of filler did you use? How's it holding up to the heat?

Just installed mine again tonight. Had the TWINtake pipes ceramic coated (not that it'll help much, but i'll do the downpipe next week when the car's in the shop for the LSD & mounts). Only cost £40, so thought I'd do it.

Engine cover was dremel'ed down, paint prep'd and painted in matte black. I quite like things looking monochrome & simple. Was considering red, but thought it would be OTT. I like the whole OEM+ kind of look.

I think you'll find that ceramic coating will help temperatures even if it's only a little. Did you get it done in the UK?

Beautifully design coordinated.
Title: Re: Modified engine cover
Post by: illektronik on March 25, 2010, 03:10:09 pm
I got it done down here. I got the kit from someone who tried it and felt that it was too noisy for him. I begged to differ and picked it up cheap from him. He'd added the bung for the remote DV and the paint job on it wasn't great. I wanted to repaint it anyway, so I stripped it back and had a local guy do the ceramic coat. I'm pretty happy with it.

Need to see whether it causes me any grief with my tune again though. Was having a series of issues (most of which are well documented by many people). So trying to get to the bottom of it. I have a flow straightener ready to add before the MAF. Just looking into securing it. Also looking at modifying some pipe into the oval shape of the OEM cover for the MAF area. Plenty to get on with.

@ Paulk. I've just using the front 2 rubber mounts. Seems pretty steady to me.

I'm a bit 50-50 on carbon too. I hate seeing it swamp everything. Subtle touches here and there amongst black seem to work.
Title: Re: Modified engine cover
Post by: NeilM on March 26, 2010, 10:41:05 am
Mine is also mounted by just the 2 front rubber mounts and I re-used a pipe clip at the rear left corner which holds it ok, I did noticed the rear right hand corner rubbing on a red Forge coolant pipe so I reinforced that outer bit of pipe work.  :happy2:

hello I am  thinking of doing this to my Leon as i have a Neuspeed filter coming

i can see where the cuts are made but I am just trying to understand how its securely mounted.

are you only using 2 of the 4 moutning rubbers? if so how do you secure the rear side and stop it from rattling on top of the filter pipe?

thanks

....No offence or accusation of cheating etc was intended. I just genuinely wondered how well kept and clean your engine bay was pre Photoshop enhancement and manipulation and now I remain in great admiration of your work, both in what you mods you have done and your photography.
