Possibly PCV on its way out?

+1 for the PCV or one of the pipes connecting to the intake...sounds like an air leak.

changed the pcv value still doing it and the cars showing no fault and the garage are saying they don't know lol

Check for cracks or splits on the pcv pipes, specifically the one going from pcv to under the inlet manifold

Idling high and funny smell. It might help if you were a bit more specific. What was the idle speed and was it stable at that speed, or rising and falling repeatedly? What was the smell? Petrol, oil, burned oil? Any smoke etc?
Need a copy of VCDS and learn how to read and monitor the sensors. Will save you a lot of repeated garage visits and it's a must on these cars.

Dont DSG boxes start to rev up and down when stationary when they're starting to get a bit upset? If you have DSG is it due a service (40k miles/3-4yrs off the top of my head)?
