Was pretty much on the bottom ,don't think this car was lived by the previous owner
tracking was way out ,needed 2 new tyres ,clutch is sticky ??? And I'm just trying to find my way round it ,I've done the air and fuel filter yesterday ,gonna change the oil today ( if I can find any Castrol edge ,magnatec or Mobil 1 5w30 suitable to use in the gttdi anyone know ? ) it was 5 o'clock this morning when I was driving it ,seems a bit more responsive now

I prefer Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 5w40 or Motul Specific 505.01/502.00 5w40, if your engine doesn't have a DPF.
If it has a DPF you need to use an oil VW 507.00 that's 5w30.

Forgive my ignorance, what is a DPF?

If your engine is a BKD, for example, it doesn't have a DPF. Only BLS, BMM and BMN have.

Il check in the handbook ,I guess it will have the engine code in there ,n1 dude

Yeap. You have a BKD. You can safely use a 5w40 oil and change it every 8.000-10.000 miles or every year. It's what I do with my diesel.
