Title: Steering rack part number revision query?
Post by: Jimmm on April 10, 2017, 01:22:57 pm
So my rack has had play in it for quite a while, so ive started the process of trying to source a 2nd hand rack, mainly because the price of new is astronomical. Ive rung my dealer who told me that my rack is superseded to

1K2423055K

My question is, ive been looking online to try and find another rack with the same part number to no luck, so would i get away fitting a rack revison F rather then revision K?

Cheers

There's more to it than just the end letter.

When looking for a second hand rack you need to find out what generation steering rack you currently have - there are three types. You can tell visually by looking at the how the rack mounts to the subframe from underneath the car

The newest Gen rack which is all the dealer will sell you is not a direct fit and requires, at minimum, a £100 wiring loom, and worst case a new subframe to go with it.

I rung uo earlier, they mentioned I would need the wiring loom, but nothing about a subframe, surely if I needed a new subframe they would of mentioned that also? What's the best way to trying find which generation I currently have?

You don't need a new sub frame for gen 3 rack its the same except you only use 3 bolts to fit the rack

So going back to my question, does it matter what revision rack I get?

I bought a new gen 3 rack from here

http://www.acspowersteering.co.uk

And got the wiring loom from tsp for about £70.
I need to get the steering characteristic curve installed at a Vw dealership but the steering feels fine so lv put it off

How much was it mate?   They list 2.  One says "Call for price" (which I hate.  Why not just list it?!!) and the second is £425.   Which isn't too bad tbh as they're like £1500 from VW.

How long have you had the rack on the car?  I've had refurbed racks in the past and they lasted 12-18 months tops before breaking again.

Second hand either buy same Gen you currently have or Gen3 with the loom (and subframe in unlikely even it is needed). Steering profile only needed on new racks, buy a used rack from a GTI or other sports model and it wont be needed.

I bought a correct Gen second hand Golf GTI rack for my Leon and didn't get so much as a fault code, didn't even need to plug VCDS in

I wouldn't mind putting the same gen on, the problem I have is that I don't know what I currently have on to begin with and don't know how I can find out without physically removing the rack

Remove the undertray and look at it from underneath, paying attention to the nearside and how it mounts to the subframe. This differs on all 3 Generation racks.

Gen 1: Uses 2 bolts to bolt the rack to the subframe directly
Gen 2: Also uses 2 bolts but utilises a U shaped clamp that goes over the rack and bolts to the subframe
Gen3: Use 1 bolt

What year is your car?

That's a gen 3 rack,  two bolts on one side and one bolt on the other

If I remember later i will find a clear image of each Gen rack so you can see what you are looking for. Throw some pictures up of your car when you get underneath it and I/we can tell you which generation you have

Is this info stickied on the forum somewhere?  It's really useful info.

Stumbled on this earlier:

I doubt it, it took me hours to find out everything I needed to ensure I bought the correct second hand rack as I didn't want to go through the hassle of changing it more than once, and the true part number is hidden under a heatshield so you won't be finding it without removing the rack from the car...

Useful image showing the Gen 2 and 3. Gen 1 is usually only the oldest of the Mk5 platform but its worth checking before ordering a replacement

When you mean steering profile is that an adaptation on vcds or something ?
