Morning all I'm currently running h&r springs on my mk6 gti they look great and the ride is fine.
But I'm having issues with speed bumps living in London it's a nightmare and I'm also getting wheel rub on the arches.
What other spring options do I have that wouldn't lower my car as much ideally a spring which drops 20 to 25mm would be better. What are my options I was thinking vwr but see @Pudding (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) he thinks they dropped he's car 30 to 35mm
-
eibach lower 25mm I think and also Vogland do 20mm
-
I've just fitted VWR springs with OEM dampers and I don't think it's dropped anywhere near 30 - 35mm. I'd say its more like 15 - 20mm at most.

Depends where you are referencing from. The belly of the car or the gap between arch and tyre.
-
ST by KW do a 20mm kit for the GTi.

Are the st springs any good. So vwr springs lower roughly 20mm as well don't want to make the wrong decision
-
I've done about 1000 miles on my VWRs already and haven't hit anything yet, so I think you'll be fine with them.
-
Thank you these are the ones I'm leaning to any pics for me plz. :happy2:
-
Pics of the springs?
-
No fitted to the car so I can see the gap between tyres and wheel arch.
-
Oh yeah

I'm following this thread, as I'm also hoping to lower my Ed30 with the VWR springs.
Pudding did you say previously the rear of the car was slightly higher than the front with the VWR's

No mate, standard is noticeably quite a bit higher at the back. VWR brings the back down quite nicely, as you can see in the pic above :happy2:
-
I don't understand why I hear about people getting arch problems with lowering springs. I had loads of room with H&Rs. Strange.
Car's looking very nice by the way @Pudding
-
Cheers buddy  Just as VW made it, but a smidge closer to the ground, perfect for me
-
Cheers mate, am I correct the VWR springs lower by about 20-25mm

I didn't take any before / after measurements but yeah, it's what VWR quote. Seems a little lower than that to me, but might just be a smoke and mirrors thing

An et51 7.5 wheel will make the car 'look' lower than a wider wheel with a lower offset, especially from a few feet away at eye level. Or at least make the wheel look like it's sat further in the arch. Parallax illusion/error.
-
Thank you pudding they don't look as low as my h&r's so might be better off with these.

Hope you don't mind @Stig_gti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6407) thoughtbid post here as I'm looking into the same thing so rather not post another thread!!! :drinking:
I'm looking for 15mm springs and do any companies do them?.
Thanks

The more information the better @r5gtt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11199).
The only springs I've read about that lower the minimum are driver gear springs.
But not even sure you can keep them here or even if there still available.

Ive not heard of them before? Are they any good @Stig

Tbh mate I don't no I'm sure I read there made by eibach.
I might of read about them on an American forum.
Only other spring I can find that lowers by 20mm f&r is the st spring made by kw.
Can not find any reviews on these tho.
-
I may have to go with H&R but they're not cheap @200 a set. I've got a full H&R suspension kit sitting at home but because they're 25-30mm I'm not fitting them as London has the most ridiculously high speed bumps especially where I live so only want to lower to a minimum of 20mm but looking at springs they're costly :stupid:

Chris was running the -20mm ST springs, he will give you the heads up.

Great thank you @munster (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11697).
@r5gtt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11199) I'm on h&r's and live in London my self this is one of the reason I want to go for something slightly higher. I'm forever catching speed bumps and starting to drive me mad.
@CP-Performance (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15414) any reviews of the st springs fitted any update would be much appreciated.
At the moment I'm leaning towards vwr springs.
-
@Stig_gti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6407) I'm catching bumps with my ED30 splitter and I'm not even lowered yet :slap:

I would say the ride feels firm and well damped without being harsh, crashy or jarring and body roll seems significantly reduced though how much is the springs and how much the new dampers I don't know. I personally wouldn't want any thing stiffer as my commute is mainly B-roads. I'm really pleased with the choice I made.

sadly and the other one is stupid idiots jamming firework in between my tyre and rim and letting it off :fighting2:

i have found my H&R roll bars have stiffened up the ride for me more than enough but just wanted to go a little lower on the stance but looking at the prices of the springs it's looking grim :sad1: don't want to fit the 25-30 H&R on as that's way too much
-
As for cost, the springs were £210 from awesome, the dampers, top mounts, bearings, bump stops and all the nuts and bolts were around £600 with a discount from my local VW dealer.

There's a guy on the edition30 Facebook group who fitted 30mm st springs, I can't seem to find the post, but from I remember he was making reference to the car not being level on the 30mm springs, not sure if this also applies to the 20mm springs.

for someone who's skint now it's a difficult decision :signLOL:
I'd have to sell my set and add another £4-500 for another set
Thanks for sharing though @Octoparrot (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14844)

No problem, I was surprised how much it all came to but I only wanted to do the job once and as the car is 11 years old and had done 124k I thought it was the right decision to renew all the bits and I still think it was. The only things I didn't really need to change would probably be the rear top mounts and the bump stops but now it's all done and I don't have to worry come MOT time.
-
Yeah did that to my last car as I'm so ocd when it comes to suspension parts and would want it all done in one go rather than messing about every other month.
I literally did everything including polybushing the whole front and rear wishbones trailing arms and forge tie bars but this time it's a little more difficult having my wife and sons to consider but I'll get there in the end :signLOL:

That's good to know. My first plan was to do what you've done. VWR springs with new OEM Sachs dampers, but then I decided to go with the whole kit. The VWR rides better than OEM in the primary ride, this is mainly down to VWR backing off the low speed compression valve in the dampers. That is pretty stiff on the OEM dampers, which gives a good brake pedal and initial turn-in. The VWR being softer here doesn't feel quite as responsive and 'chuckable' as the OEM setup on initial inputs, which is a bit disappointing. But I can live with it as the ride quality is way less crashy than OEM in general.

If I read this correctly, the VWR kit does away with the stiff, jiggly ride of the OEM set-up?
Sometimes I swear my car has square wheels such is the sharp jiggling at both town and highway speeds.
