Title: Looking to buy mk5 golf gt TDI
Post by: bullzeye on May 01, 2017, 01:43:14 pm
Hi guys as the title says im currently in the market for a mk5 gt tdi

Can anyone tell me which one would be better , either the tdi 140 or the 170? year 2008

I like power so my heart says go for the 170 but my head says 140 for better fuel consumption, cheaper tax and insurence

Also would it be better to go manual or DSG?, bare in mind i have never drove a DSG / automatic car ever!

I have £2500 , not the best budget ever but im hoping i can get a decent one for that
Any help appreciated, Thankyou

I'll do a PD140 with a remap. Should give some like 180bhp and still with good fuel numbers.

I've got a mk5 tdi 08 plate, 170bhp stage 1 remap with now 214bhp get 50mpg depending on how you drive, 89000 miles, black with 18" black Vancouver alloys, full leather, kenwood satnav with built in Bluetooth, cruise control, FSH.

I'd maybe sell it but would need to be more than your £2.5k budget!

140's have no DPF. Mine with a Darkside Remap and EGR delete is 170-180bhp and regularly see 50+mpg  :happy2:

Eighteen88, i wish i could afford more, its took me a long time to get what i have now, your car sounds awsome and just what im looking for, but unfortunatly i cant afford it,

So if i was to get a 140. what other mods would i have to do if i was to get it remapped to 170-180?

also, if anyone see's any 140s within my budget, and under 120k miles please post link here,

Much appreciated
Thankyou

Depends a lot on what it will be used for. I have a 2007 gt tdi 170, manual, remapped to about 210bhp and 300lbft of torque, it pulls very well and puts a big smile on my face and averages around 44mpg but can get 50 on longer drives. The 170 does have the DPF though so if you're doing a lot of short journeys/town driving then It's definitely something to take into consideration and possibly avoided.

I have no experience of the DSG system but worth a try before you commit to buying one as some people love it and some hate it.

I think for that budget you're more likely to get a 140 with a pretty high mileage but there are some good deals about. Usual applies, make sure it's got a good service history, check arches etc for rust, common golf problems... the 170 also had an injector recall so best tocheck that's been done before buying one, plenty of info if you search the forum.

Hi Chris Thanks, i will be using the car mainly for short journeys, the mrs is a care worker and travels house to house, no more than a mile in between each house.

So yeah its loooking more likely that the 140 is my best option, i do like power but im not a massive speed freak, i just it to be there when needed.
if i do deceide on a remap, would i need upgraded clutch ? as thats something i wouldnt be able to afford anytime soon.

Yeah, I would avoid the DPF then.

the 140 with a remap should be around 170ish bhp and the standard clutch should be fine to handle that.

No worries, there are a lot of them about so don't just buy the first one you see in budget. it's worth being picky about condition and servicing etc The engines are pretty bulletproof so can handle the high mileages.

All the best for your search and yeah, stick around, it's a great forum with loads of info and active members.

@bullzeye (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=19739)

Bodywork wise, look for rust on front arches, front sills; near where they meet the arches and under rear badge/handle... think that's it. For a 140, the engine will be a BKD, Try and go for an 2006/2007 MY as they have a later revision C head. Most optional extras's can be retro fitted, like leather, highline clocks, multi function steering wheel, satnav etc, but Climatronic AC isn't one of them, so if that's important, make sure the one you buy has it.

Not sure if that's helpful, but good luck with the purchase :)

Recently bought my mum a 56 plate golf GT (tdi) 170bhp dsg. Black 5dr with a pretty basic spec but auto was the main priority as my mum has difficulties driving at times. Drives really nice and is a low milleage at 74k with FVWSH. I enjoy driving more than my edition sometimes

Rtech remaps show figures around 210bhp and loads of torque. I am considering in doing this along with a DPF delete as the motorway runs will slow down soon and I don't want any issues from town driving.

I've heard the 140bhp are little hooners and with a remap will be plenty of fun around town with a decent MPG return.

I would recommend to be patient and be willing to compromise on spec for a well looked after one and decent miles (you'll be surprised there are still a few on the market with less than 80-90k). You can always get the little bits you want at a later date.

Also Does anyone know why 2 golf gt tdi's from the same year, would have different front bumpers/grill . theres one that looks very plain, and theres a gt sport bumper,( which i prefer ) and then theres others with gti bumpers, like the one posted in the link above
Title: Re: Looking to buy mk5 golf gt TDI
Post by: Christiank on May 06, 2017, 12:06:40 am
The bumpers changed when the face lifted model where introduced somewhere around 2006'ish.

I've also has a 2.0 diesel 140bhp but with the old front and not the newer "gt" front end. The get front end will have no problem using the GTI grills. The old bumper can't use gt or gti without modification.

My car drove around 330.000km on stock clutch. Changed the clutch and had it remapped to around the 180bhp, think it's a little more than 180. Is a totally different car.

Of course you'll have all the maintaine parts swapped along the run, but these parts comes at lol cars. My now got almost 350.000 on the clock and pulls like a bull.

And yes the rust issues are really some that you should look after.. as been told earlier look at the panels also get on your knees and have a look/feel behind it. The tail gate around the logo and at the bottom will rust at some point due to some design faults long with the front wings. Mine however doesn't show any sign of rust on the front but in the back instead.

And yes it's a great car to modify if you want to start getting down this road :jumping:

Consider a 1.4 122PS TSI ? I suspect this will be much better for short journeys!

Apparently had an engine change by VW at the cost of 6k.. i find that hard to believe ? What you think?

Would be nice to know why it needed/had the engine change. Can't see in the pictures if there's any rust on arches, sills or around boot badge/handle.

It's also worth noting that it's the pd170 so will have the dpf as mentioned in previous posts.

Mine has had an engine change at 11k miles because of a leaking block so could be a similar problem... worth investigating further.

Hi Chris currently waiting in a reply from him, im getting so stressed, i keep refreshing, ebay, autotrader, gumtree, and going over and over the same cars, just waiting for the right one at the right price,

ideally i want the gt sport face lift front end, with dsg,  looking at around £2700 and trying to get them down too £2500.

Reply I got from seller:

Car needed new engine as it has metal particles in the oil, suspected ring failure, car was still in warranty by Lloyds Tsb lease and they have paid almost 6k for a new engine, all the paperwork is available to prove it..

Sounds like a valid reason,

As I said, can't see in the pics the condition of the paint though so you'd really need to see it in the flesh to check it over. Looks like a good enough deal though, generally clean and tidy in the photos with lots of paperwork/history, You should be able to get the price down to your budget too.

Mind it has the DPF though so lots of short trips wouldn't be too good for it.

Chris

Thanks chris, How do you know this is the 170 dpf version? And her fact its had an engine change wouldent put you off? i would normaly swerve that lol, but im gettin desperate
Title: Re: Looking to buy mk5 golf gt TDI
Post by: ChrisGT on May 07, 2017, 12:25:15 am
It says in the advert that it's the 125kw which is the 170bhp version.

It also has the same engine cover as mine which is only on the pd170. The other engines have different ones.

I wouldn't be put off by the engine thing as long as the paperwork all matched up and i could physically give it a good check over/make sure it's running well. As i said, my car had a full engine change under warranty at 11k.

Yep that's exactly how it sounds like a siren in the distance. Still hear it when windows are up. Hopefully just a leak ;(

Some of them seem to whistle more than others, could be a boost leak somewhere but if it's not a leak then wouldn't worry about.

As a TDI 140 BKD owner; had 2 turbos on the engine and they both did this to varying degrees. Don't worry, just enjoy your car :)
