Title: Turbo radial shaft play?
Post by: Sulley91 on May 01, 2017, 07:25:52 pm
Brought a new genuine k04 turbo from vw, I've noticed its got a bit of play side to side but not in and out is that normal? Doesnt hit the walls or anything , it has about 1mm or so play

Yes, I think it's normal, the little bit of "slack" you speak of should be taken up by the oil pressure once up and running, that's to my understanding.

Someone with more mechanical engineering knowledge might be able to elaborate..

It's good to know they're like that from new because my 110K old KO4 also has approx. 1mm of play.  I thought it was f'cked so bought a TTE420 (any excuse eh?)

As above, you'd expect most turbos do have a little play in the shaft/bearings to allow space for oil.   I remember my old ball bearing Garrett GTxxxxR turbos had play when brand new also, so it must be normal.

If you're not happy with your new turbo, I'm more than happy to swap it for my old one
