I recently bought a Golf GTi MK5 that was registered in November 2006. I'm after a RNS510 for it but am a bit confused with which version/firmare to go for.
Therefore could somebody please tell me the differences in the B and C versions and also the differences in firmware’s 1100 and 2600?
I would like the DVD to be played when car is on the move (not for me, the passengers :signLOL: ) , would I be able to do this with firmware 1200 or would I need the 2600?
I know mortygttdi has a deal on these in the for sale section but I can't post a reply there for some reason, nor can I PM, maybe too new to the forum!
Thanks

You need to get a few posts! (10 for pms)
Neither Fw will allow dvd on the move automatically however there is a thing you can do to allow them both to play on the move. Press buttons, I cant remember which someone will know. :happy2:
-
Cool thats nice to know, when I get one I'm sure someone will help me out on the forum. Is there also an option to make the unit multi-region, assuming they come out the factory set as region 2.
10 posts will take forever!
-
PM me...I can provide details of how to get the DVD playing whilst on the move.

Brilliant.
-
No problem. As mine is fw1100, ive never tried it myself.
-
Is there a reason why shouldn't try it on the fw1100?
-
182_blue mentioned it had to be 2680.
Ill try it on the way home this evening to see if i can get Alan Partridge talking to me while i drive!
-
Nice one, would be nice to know, I don't get my unit till next week.
-
Any luck Lyons?

Sorry for not getting back sooner devilt. I think Lyon has kindly dug out the forum post...
Let me know if you need any further info.

I can confirm the DVD playback "hack" works on firmware 1200 and 2600. I have a rev. C unit.
-
Nice one.
I am getting a version B as I have a 56 GTi, how old is your car? If old as mine do you suffer from battery drainage?
-
APologies, forgot all about it! I have a dvd sitting beside my keys so ill try it in the morning.
My car is 07 and i have a version B with no battery drain.
FW1100 doesnt suffer from battery drain.

I think the battery drainage issue is related to the CANBUS revision...anything above later than rev. K is fine... may be someone on the forum can elaborate further...
-
No joy im afraid. :sad1:
-
No worries, thanks for checking.

Thanks. Do you know how I can check what Canbus version I have.
Also is it quite easy to upgrade from 1200 to 2600?
-
VCDS (VAG-COM) tells which revision of the canbus is installed.
I have the image for 2600 - which I can some how get over to you.

That would be good, I will give you a shout when I need it. Still one thing confusing the hell out of me, the difference between a B version and a C version.
I read the C version has DAB, so does this mean it is the whole RNS510 unit that is different?
-
I have rev C - and it certainly doesn't have DAB.
-
Have you added the DAB aerial?
In a thread it says that the C has DAB.
-
No where in the menu system is there a DAB option...not even "greyed" out (disabled).
Where would the DAB aerial normally be situated?
-
Mmm, you may have an earlier version of C then, look at the first post on page 10 of this thread:

Unsure where it fits I just read the thread that is linked above. :happy2:

Got my RNS510 installed this morning, looks brilliant.
Just an update on the DAB, although I am not sure which version I have (no idea how to check), I have the DAB option.
Basically what you need to is hold down the 'set-up' button when you turn the unit on and after a few seconds a menu will appear, which gives a list of radio options.
I need to speak to Darren who supplied me the unit to ask what version this is and whether the DAB will actually work if a DAB aerial is plugged in.
-
There should be a part number on the label of the unit. It will end in a,b or c. If you have it hooked it up you can get it to come on the screen. Think it is in the settings somewhere. :happy2:
-
Thanks will check it later on, missus has took the car out.
I have read that if you hold down the set-up button for 20 seconds after powering the unit up you can bring up a hidden menu that will allow you to see the firmware/version on the unit. Tried it but it doesn't work.

I think I have read somewhere that the hidden menu has to be activated in VCDS on some RNS's. :happy2:

Any proper VCDS cable will do it, i.e micro can etc
-
Thanks, but what I meant was which one of these do I need the left (908) or on the right (409): http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/
