I've just bought a set of R8 coil packs for my 05 gti, how much of a performance gain should I see/feel? I've heard people raving about them but been told to keep hold of the OEM ones as they'll burn out quicker.
The reason I bought them is because someone was selling them for £33.90 including shipping for a set of 4. Second hand of course. If they don't work it's no big deal I guess. I'm working on a budget here!

None.
It was no more than a theory - a long time ago - that the resistance of the R8 coils could provide a better spark. But in practice, there's no real difference.
They're a bit cheaper than the black top GTI coils, and red. That might have helped the theory gain a bit of momentum for a while, if you know what I mean.
The only way of guaranteeing any 'performance gain' would be replacing knackered coils with new ones. Regardless of which were red or black.
Unless your existing coil(s) are knackered, in fitting a used set you stand to gain zero, or even a misfire you never had.

Wonder who was arguing with me when I said there's. O difference in power :signLOL: same as the GFB dv+ where I said it's better on throttle and mid range but again people put that down. Oh the VIS hpfp internals were no good but people seem to be chewing the sellers arms off for them
Funny that
Sorry mate R8 coils just look good no gains whatsoever :happy2:

Oh

It's a well known fact that R8 coilpacks at 10 bhp ya know..... :signLOL:

Per cylinder!

Lol, no gain at all.
HS Tuning (I think?) mentioned the primary windings have slightly more resistance in the R8 coils, implying a stronger spark, but they didn't back it up with any test results. And they wouldn't, because there is no difference.....certainly not a difference anyone other than those easily fooled by placebo would detect.
To get a bigger spark, you need a lot more coil windings - lots more than you can fit inside the standard pencil coil.....and a bigger plug gap. And even then you won't notice anything.

Stick an R8 badge on the back, it'll become 4 wheel drive

I fitted them when i had a misfire purely because they were about £30 cheaper than OEM golf ones, they made zero performance difference but cured the misfire so that was good enough for me

Rubbish....anything red clearly adds at least 10bhp! :signLOL:
-
Well my car is red so I guess it came 210 BHP from the factory huh
-
You jest but red GTIs have always been the fastest  Seriously.... I had a few MK2 16Vs back in the day and my red F reg 'small bumper' one was ballistic, way faster than the black and blue ones I had. Same with 8V GTIs too. Red is just best for some reason. They had to make up for turning pink I guess.
