Title: 2005 VW GTI, odometer screen mileage fault
Post by: Imz26 on May 22, 2017, 05:21:58 pm
Hi, recently got a vw golf gti 2005.
Car was standing for around 1 day in the sun, switched the car to find the mileage has faded and i can just about see it. Mileage still clocks up as normal on driving. The rest of the screen time/mpg etc is fine just mileage part at bottom is disappearing.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Check the battery charge, it generally fades there with low battery but the rest doesn't

Very common on midline clocks, best to upgrade them to highline ones.

Nothing at all to do with the battery. How does that even make sense? it's all powered from the same bleedin circuit.

Just an old / failing display. Upgrade the dash cluster.

I've had this before, first noticed it when I hit 100k so I thought it was due to the new lights activating for the extra digit. Slight fading for the first 3 numbers but it soon sorted itself out without doing anything.

This... Same as mine bottom part goes faint, but sharp as anything when temperatures drop again...

Yes i was told it was due to the car directly facing the sun. I faced the front of the car towards a wall and went to start car after a day and it was back to normal. Asked a local car electrican he said due to heat melting the liquid crystals in display and to leave window open a little in heat. Also said £100 labour to change cluster due to it being connected to immobiliser and about £50 for cluster.

Get a cluster for £50 midline or £100 - 150 for a highline, Bring it to me and I can code it for £40.
