Title: Need some guidence for installing new speakers
Post by: Christiank on June 15, 2017, 06:59:44 pm
Hey guys. So I've never really tried installing a speaker system in a car before... Like never - so bare with me :D

I've bought the Rainbow speaker system to replace my 3-way speaker system in the front doors and another Rainbow set to replace my 2-way system in the rear doors.

The Rainbow front door kit comes with new frames that will make the new 8''  fit along with a cable that goes direct into the cable that was connected to the old genuine VW speaker. The adaptor cable from rainbow goes into this  genuine VW old speaker connector and has two fork connectors on the other end.

Are this the line in +/- ? I've tried to wire the speaker system to the cross over unit but there's no sound? The lower 8'' speaker vibrates a little bit but there's no tweeter og midle tone at all. The filt has everything labeled so not much can go wrong here I think..

Is there anything I need to do to the door loom before it gives the signal to the new speakers? I'm not using any of the old speaker connectors for tweeter or midle tone. And as told the connector that came with the Rainbow kit can only fit the old VW bass speaker.

I don't have the car home atm so can't test any suggestions of yet. However I haven't tried to disconnect the genuine filter/cross-over unit? Could this be my problem?

Any suggestions? :D

"However I haven't tried to disconnect the genuine filter/cross-over unit? Could this be my problem?"

yes Chris this is the problem, remove OEM X-over and cut the cables from the connector to go to your new x-over.

to know which 2 cables it is look in the door plug there will be 2 cables that match 2 colours on the x-over, any brown / brown with stripe cables should be NEG

if you can wait till tomorrow afternoon (i'm on nights) I can get you all the colours and send a quick diagram

i'm not promoting my guide but parts of it may help

I've fitted the rainbow kit to the front of my 3 door, bass, mids (which it didn't have originally), and replacement tweeters, I just followed the wiring diagram in the installation manual using the rainbow supplied crossovers. You'll need to buy extra cable and connectors to do it though.

Hey Si. First thing I did when there was no sound was to look in your guide. But could not use it since you kept your original X-over cable made with new repair wires.

I've bought some speaker cable and fort / spade connectors so I think I've got all the parts for the install hehe.

My set only came with a guide for the install in german - looked up an english version online though. But hey english is not my main language - guess you've already figured this out in first post :D

I've also installed the Rainbow 3 way kit in my car but ran all new Speaker cabling and didn't use any of the VW wiring at all. Fitted the Rainbow crossovers under the front seats as they wouldn't fit where the VW ones were in the door card.
