Title: Resonator removed (drone)
Post by: Leco_GTI on July 05, 2017, 12:10:53 am
Today I finally had the centre resonator removed. This was the first "mod" I did since I bought the car 6 months ago and I always wanted to do. I searched through the forum and possibly read all the topics about this mod and I only remembered seeing one person complaining about drone. So my first 30min driving after had the resonator removed was not that great. The first 5min I was chuffed but after a while it started giving me a light headache due to the drone in the cabin. When it's under load it sounds nice and much louder than in the videos I watched on youtube. However coming off the gas specially in sport mode it's dreadful. I will give a few weeks to see if I get used to it.

Out of curiosity how much did it cost you? seems to be pretty cheap in the US but prices here vary quite a bit.

I thought the same. Reading online the guys over there were geting it done for around 50$. I paid £110 VAT inc.

You will be refitting the resonator very soon

I had the same issue, Drone was bad when on cruise control on motorway. I had to tap the gas a little bit each time to calm the drone down to stop the little one getting disturbed when sleeping in the back.

I ended up swapping my exhaust with a friend as he liked the sound. It cost me £90 for the resonator to be deleted by EMP Performance

I had mine done at EMP too. It cost me £110 so I assume you had yours removed some time ago. Maybe a downpipe is just what I needed for a bit more sound on a budget.

Yep, but if you put a bigger downpipe decat, you may get an engine check light come up

The sound will get annoying. better off getting a catback tbh.

then you may aswell get a downpipe too for a bit more power.

Just get a turboback and call it a day lol :happy2: :happy2:

Go see Nigel at Powervalve/BCS. Nothing too loud when youre pootling along around town but push revs up and the boost allows you to bypass the silencer and the noise is awesome. Best mod I made to my car  :happy2:

I read about getting a CEL when putting a downpipe. I guess this will have to be tweaked via VAGCOM. I remember reading something about this.

If I could (£££) I would go turboback. It's just not the right time yet (£££). The noise didn't annoy me much today and I drove a lot. I will see how I will cope the next days.

Thanks for the input about the BCS/Powervalve. Do you guys have a catback or turboback?

This sort of things really depresses me...
Anyone offering this service needs to give a full and frank appraisal of the consequences to driver comfort... unless of course they have no experience and are simply adhering to the owners wishes.
At the very least in order to access a louder sound profile the drone needs to be dialled out with Helmholtz profiling. By the time this is all done your into £300.00 for a bolt in bolt out component - which is still only ever going to be mated to a ferrous system.
You're better off buying a stainless cat back (one that doesn't drone lol) second hand if you're on a tight budget.
Anyone needing advice call me

I had the same problem, however, after hours of research I decided to leave the resonator in place. Instead I chopped the rear silencer off and replaced with a straight pipe and i couldnt be happier! No drone at all, still sounds stock when driving slowly (the girlfriend test worked, she didnt notice at all!) but also sounds awesome when you put your foot down, and typical dsg blurrrp sounds when shifting!  :happy2:

Thanks for the explanation and advice Nigel. I will definitely get in touch in a near future ;)

If I knew I would have done the rear section. I can't justify doing this after having the resonator removed because totalising everything would be almost the price of a reasonable catback. I will be better off saving from now on. In any case, thank you for sharing your experience :)
