Title: silver unit on floor under drivers seat out side

hello I have a mk 5 golf 2 litre gt tdi under the drivers seat but attached to the bottom of the floor pan there is a silver unit os some sorts about 4/5 inches wide and about 10 inches long could some one tell what is as it has broken off one end cheers
