Title: MK5 GTI - Where to go Tuning.
Post by: GitFlog on August 13, 2017, 04:16:16 am
I currently have a 100% standard 2005 MK5 GTI and its tune time.

Only problem is I have no idea what parts to get. I don't want to go crazy with everything just a few upgrades and a rolling road from R-Tec as i have been told me they are the place to go.

I am looking to hopefully get to around 250-300bhp and would love some help on what I need to invest my money in.

Anyone who can help me with what parts I should be getting and any links of where to get them I would be massively grateful.

Thanks in advance

Best to fit a few mods to help with remap as you will get better gains.

Sports cat/downpipe... Or pre cat delete if you don't wanna buy a new cat.
Maybe an intake but that's debatable for gains.
Maybe exhaust system to get the gasses out quicker but that's more ££

Okay go with hardware 1st before a remap
Make sure you have an uprated pcv
Check what state your cam follower is in while you are working on the engine
You probably want to upgrade your DV especially of its a standard one
You probably should upgrade your exhaust to a 3" downpipe as the standard pipe is a real bottleneck for power.
Upgrade to a cold air intake if you are wanting to get near 300hp
Upgrade your intercooler if funds allow
Upgrade your injectors if funds allow
As you stated a good remap with a combination of good hardware upgrades will transform a standard gti.
Beware its a bloody money pit these cars lol

An uprated pcv isnt needed.

Revo intake
S3 intercooler
Decent de-cat exhaust system
HPFP upgrade - Many options for this depending on budget
Clutch upgrade will likely be needed if manual and the clutch has not been replaced recently.......
Check PCV, Diverter valve & cam follower - replace as necessary.

Follow these for the basics: http://r-techperformance.co.uk/2-0-tfsi-tuning/ and http://r-techperformance.co.uk/vw-golf-mk5-gti-tfsi-200-remap/

I went to R-Tech for a stage 1. Top notch service and 250hp/320lbft from the map with the only mod being a pre-cat removal. Have to say I'm well happy with the car. In terms of bang-for-buck; going any further will yield fewer returns for a lot more ££. Economy is better than stock too. Win win.

Just make sure the precat is removed properly if you opt for that. Any debris left behind will result in loss of performance (I found out the hard way).  :signLOL:

Correct. Just make sure it's working or recently renewed, and the same goes for the DV. OEM rev G will be spot on.

In my experience, if you don't want to compromise too much but want a solid step up from Stage 1:

3" downpipe with decat or good quality sport cat (BCS or Milltek), or ideally a full exhaust.

Uprated fuel pump (Loba or APR).

R-Tech map. Label it what you want - 1+, 2+, whatever. You'll see a reliable 270bhp, lots of torque from low revs, and shouldn't have to spend too much to get there.

Intakes and uprated intercoolers are nice to have, but something I'd personally put in the 'not essential unless you're chasing numbers or going k04' category.

Just make sure the basics are right before you start turning the dial up.
