Title: Not clued up on exhausts and needing help
Post by: Dave_d on August 15, 2017, 05:55:03 pm
Hi guys, I took my car to the garage earlier to get a mechanic to check over the exhaust as it sounds like a tractor! It turns out the flexi in my downpipe is blowing very badly, so will need to be replaced.

Currently it has a standard downpipe and cats which then go into a  3"stainless cobra exhaust, I've decided I'm going down the de cat route so I need a decat pipe to replace my current. I've found this but I'm unsure if it will fit? Wil it need adaptors or anything?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162590892180

Really appreciate any help you can give me. Need to get it sorted asap as my car sounds awful

Dave

It looks to fit a MK5 gti, but you won't need the transfer pipe they give you. It looks to be for running the oem stock exhaust as it goes from their DP diameter to a smaller bit. So, in addition to that DP you'll need a section to connect the DP to your exhaust. You may want an 90° angled O2 spacer. I am catless as well and my CEL was always on until I installed one. Got one off ebay for $15usd.[ https://www.google.com/search?q=angled+o2+spacer&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiDxJum79nVAhVKVWMKHRirD_EQ_AUICigB&biw=1173&bih=529 ] Aim it so the O2 is upstream and slightly elevated North of horizontal...mine ↓

Sorry to sound simple, what is a transfer pipe  my cars had a map so it's had the eml erased according to a guy I took my car to rolling road.

Should do, as your cobra catback is already mated to the standard downpipe. Get a pic up of the cobra and can tell you if it'll defo fit

It is the second pipe in the pic of the DP in question you gave the link to... and it is just a nearly straight section reduced at one end for oem sized exhaust fitment...goes between the DP and catback. Why i said won't need it due to your existing 3" catback. Probably need that section made to fit what you got. Likely can be stretched back out to 3" and add a v-band or whatever is at the upstream end of your 3" catback.

Great, no need for the O2 spacer then.  :drinking:

Put some pics of it on here and any modifications required for it to fit to the 3" catback system as I am looking to do this

I'm guessing there's probably a reducer on the catback to mate up to the oem downpipe.

So technically after fitting the new dp, it'll now be 3" reduced to 2.5" then back to 3"

Decat will make it loud, should sound good.
Does the catback have a resonator and muffler?

I've got no idea! As I say I'm not clued up on exhausts. I'll post some pics of underside of exhaust. Maybe you will be able to tell

I'd hazard a guess on it being non resonated. I've done a video on a view of the exhaust. Maybe you can tell from the video?

Yeah non resonated, will be loud.
Having a look at the video, im trying to figure out what clamps have been used to mate it together...
You might need a 2.5" exhaust sleeve/clamp, same as the one that comes with the oem exhaust...
Are you fitting it yourself?

Worried it'll be too loud now  :scared:
My local mechanic is going to be fitting it for me, he'll sort out future MOT's for me too.
I must admit she sounds sublime on wide open throttle.
I'll get him to offer it up when it comes, to then see what adaptors I may need. Hopefully nothing

Not too loud...mine is decat w/o resonator and just a small Borla...

...and this one is some normal driving sounds...

Is that the eBay downpipe?
I'll be getting this at the end of the month, if you could let us knis what it's like once fitted.

On another note, how is everyone attaching pics now?
I've tried Flickr and imgur apps in phone but can't get it to work?

I've made a new video showing my downpipe section going into my cobra exhaust. It looks to me like the cobra exhaust has the pipe that flows down to 2 1/4 to join the standard downpipe. The de cat I bought is 3" then end section is 2 1/4 so in theory it should be just a straight swap and no sleeves are needed? Excuse my ignorance as I really am not clued up on exhaust one little bit.

Here's the video

Also may I add I'm attempting to measure the width of the pipe lying on floor with arm stretched

If your cobra joins to standard down pipe, and the decat downpipe is designed to fit to oem cat back then it should fit fine mate

Hi guys, so.. the decat  downpipe has been fitted! She sounds sensational on WOT  :driver:
My mechanic struggled to fit this to my cobra cat back, the clamp that was supplied with it was far too small, the hangers are out of line with the holes so he had to weld my old ones onto the side of them to get it located. 2 Of the 4 bolts sheered off so he had to weld nuts on to get them out.
Would I recommend it? Yes if you are fitting yourself and have access to welding gear or your mechanic does, my car sounds lovely now, a very nice deep roar from my exhaust now, people say that de cats drone on motorways, however I drove at 60mph for a few miles and noticed no drone? It's loud, but then remember I'm now decat and also have non resonated cobra cat back. I might swap out the cobra in the future to a resonated version, I'll see how I get on anyway..

@Dave_d (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=19690)

Sounds a nightmare.
You say The hangers on the downpipe were wrong?
Title: Re: Not clued up on exhausts and needing help
Post by: Dave_d on August 23, 2017, 09:48:40 pm
Yeah that's correct. As the pipe has many slight curves in it I don't think the flexi has been welded in the "correct rotation" as it seemed to me that if it was rotated around just slightly more it'd have lined up ok. The welding looked spot on though. As I work with welders everyday you get an idea of a good / bad weld. Quite possibly I just had someone who wasn't concentrating when they welded I it together. Just my luck though for 2 bolts to sheer off on my original downpipe.

Was this the downpipe for £118 on eBay ? Sold by Fast bits?
Thus is what I got and thought I'd test fit the pipes together and the v clamp doesn't  fit?? Bad start

Mine was 118.99, sold by seller "fastlanestyling-Europe2012". Yeah my clamp didn't fit either. Far to small.  For the money though I'm very happy with it, certainly gave me a it more oomph and turbo spools up quicker, smells nice too. Hehe :driver:
