Title: Pre-cat removal London
Post by: Leco_GTI on August 23, 2017, 04:33:23 pm
Hi all,

Can someone recommend a place that can remove the pre-cat in London? I was quoted £288 and almost laughed.

Thank you.

My guy can do it in leytonstone. He charges between £80-£120 depending if the bolts on the turbo are seized.

£288?!?! Why have some people got to be such scamming ***** and always be on the take?! Out if interest, how did that 'mechanic' justify that price? ***** like that should be called out. Jim at JKM in Portsmouth charged me an hour's labour plus new nuts and gasket IIRC - top, honest, proper mechanic.

The guy said I would have to leave the car with the garage for half day as the exhaust needed to cool down. This garage claims to be Audi and VW specialists. Maybe they never done this and don't know what is involved. Not sure what is going on with their price but definitely not paying £288 that's for sure.

I got it. Yeah hes a vw enthusiast himself. If you see him at his garage and the cars he has you will feel right at home. I give him all of my jobs to do no matter how difficult.

Its a shame that some of these mechanics just want to rip people off instead of trying to gain a valuable customer for years to come

Should be an easy enough job for any custom exhaust fabricator. Perhaps have a look for your local longlife or powerflow place.

I can do it, not a mechanic and might take a lil while longer doing it lol but I've done mine and I have access to a lift
Only thing I'm dreading is the nuts that tend to snap off...

Thank you MIJ_JAGGER. I will give RetroRaz mechanic's a call today and see if I can get booked in for next week. If for some reason I can't get this done with him I will drop you a message mate.

Thanks a lot everyone for all the help. This forum is amazing. Since I bought my car in January, the amount of help and useful information here is WELL BEYOND my expectations. I will keep you guys updated  :happy2:

Finally my car had the precat removed. My impressions so far:

- Sharper throttle response;
- A tiny bit deeper exhaust note;
- A tiny bit louder exhaust sound (I also have the resonator removed);
- Cold start is louder even though I didn't have a chance to experience a proper morning cold start;
- Car is deffinitely quicker (no placebo effect).

I was expecting the DSG "burp" to be louder but it's not (when changing from 1st to 2nd at 4.5K RPM in Sport Mode).

Would I do it again? Yes. This was the first mod that I should have done since I bought the car.

I would like to thank RetroRaz who indicated me his mechanic for this job. Without his help I would still be ringing other garages. The best part is that it wasn't expensive and his mate didn't mind me to staying there looking at the whole process. Thanks a lot RetroRaz  :happy2:
