Title: What Price Timing Belt & Chain Replacement?
Post by: H18Golf on August 23, 2017, 06:54:18 pm
Hi,

Ive owned my 06 GTi for 3 years now and would like to get the timing belt, chain, tensioners, the lot replaced at an indy garage.  The belt was changed just prior to me buying the car.

My question is, what sort of price should i be looking at for a garage to supply and fit all the parts.  Im in West Scotland if that might make any difference (London prices etc may be more)?

Thanks

I had the timing belt kit done earlier in the year, I don't think there is any crossover items from the timing belt and chain as they are on opposite sides of the block anyway.

Belt, waterpump, coolant and labour was a total of £375 from my local indy.

By no means an accurate assessment, but having followed a few stories on this issue, I had mentally totted it up to be circa £800  -£1000, with all the bits (incl chain tensioner and adjuster - the pricey bit - and garage labour). With some of these cars being around the £3k mark, it does become disproportionately very expensive, relative to the value of the car - compared to £1000 on say a  £30k car.....

It's certainly making me think about it. As these cars get older, they seem to be more for the competent DIYer. I used to do a lot of work on my cars when I was a lot younger than I am now, and things were easier to work on, but you read so many GTI issues and bad design components, and bolts and things seizing (even for the professional guys) - it seems a right nightmare, doh

Had my timing chain and tensioner done on my 2007 Edition 30 a few weeks ago at VW. Came to almost £1400.Luckily i have a warranty policy on it so only have to pay £324 of that.

I paid £167 for the cam chain, tensioner and gaskets and bolts then paid £150 for it to be changed.

My car had its cam belt and water pump done by vw in January 2016 think the previous owner paid about 460

Had mine done at vw in Camberley. They quoted £450, odd quid from memory as I had a full major service at the same time. Total bill was £808. Spoke with a couple of main dealers and they all had different pricing varying between £20 of each other. That was for cambelt, tensioners, water pump etc. They were cheaper than the main go to specialists as well which I found odd
