Trip back from Scotland yesterday the ED30 let out a large bang and went into limp mode. No power, engine sounds rough and what sounds like large amounts of air are escaping from the engine. There is an oil leak and the coolant level has dropped. I've checked the PCV and diverter valve and they seem fine. I'm pretty sure the turbo has let go, but I'm unsure. Having it trailered to VW tomorrow, but would appreciate any thoughts. It's a 57 with 50k miles.

Sounds pretty drastic, nothing we can add to this. Let VW assess the damage.
-
Are you sure just havent popped a hose off? Unplug the MAF and see if it all changes
-
I can't see any hoses off, unplugging the MAF doesn't change anything unfortunately. It's over at VW now so will keep the thread updated with progress!

As suspected the turbo is stuffed. New one ordered and with any luck should have the car back this week. Changing all fluids and checking everything else out whilst it's in. Not cheap, but at least I'll have a 2 yr warranty on the new turbo.

It let go at 50k! Is it mapped?

Second that.
Something is amiss here. I'm at 100K miles on original turbo without fault.
Dodgy last owner? Dropped a torx bit in the inlet accidentally?
Ask VW for your old turbo when it's removed to check the condition of the fins

Agree that something is not right, my last GTI went to 160,000 miles with no issues. VW keeping the parts for me to collect so that I can inspect.
And no, it's not mapped, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been reflashed on sale.

Must have been a catastrophic failure to lose oil, coolant and make a big bang! Interested in the carnage pics please
I would inspect the oil line circuit for the turbo just to make sure it's not being starved of oil, or the new one could go the same way.
-
It was rather a loud bang when it let go. Everything is being checked by VW and the work will be guaranteed, unfortunately the muppets forgot to order some parts so will be next week before I get her back.

Feel for you pal, hopefully not too expensive to get yourself back on the road. Has the oil pick up been checked. Yours cars low miles (if your not the only owner that is) is maybe down to short journeys which might have made it more succeptible to blockages in the pick up. It'd be tragic to get the new turbo on and that be heading the same way as the first. I'll keep an eye on what diagnosis you get from the garage when you get it back. All the best though.....🙏

It was the turbo. I've had the lines flushes and oil changed as a precaution. All seems well now and it's driving better than it has for a while. We've been on some long journeys up to Scotland and back, so hopefully it's all sorted. now to sort the tiny dent in the sill and she'll be all sorted.
-
Glad you got it sorted mate :happy2:
Have you ever owned a tt out of curiosity

Weird one that. Hopefully the new snail will survive a bit longer than the last one!
