Title: Bye Bye photobucket
Post by: dazza on September 04, 2017, 12:59:04 pm
Photobucket have wrecked this forum so many good threads ruined with missing pics. I've had enough of this image.

I've written a script to scrape images out of photobucket, this is going to take some time 1500 images copied so for if anyone has any objections to their images being copied and links updated please let me know. (only images on this forum will be copied not your complete photobucket account).

Agreed, its a particulary ugly image isnt it! Grr I dont know what they have achieved here, I struggle to believe anyone will pay for the service. Have they not just run themselves out of business?

Maybe hopefully they will all be gone soon. Providing people don't continue to use photobucket images in posts.

They will probably make millions even if 1% of people pay.

No objections from me, what a top man for offering this!

I think PB's aim was to hold businesses and other people who didn't keep backups of their images to ransom.  It's ethically and morally abhorrent, but not really a surprising move in the current climate.  I just hope other companies don't follow suit.

It's been my thinking for some time, that once your stuff is 'in the cloud', you're left vulnerable to hacking and underhand tactics like PB's.  So I have backups of backups stored on backups, which are backed up once a week, on my main backup, which is also backed up, just in case.

It's like social media.  If there is something you don't want others getting hold or seeing, don't post it.

Well done Dazza, couple of other forums I'm on have done or are doing the same thing. Are you hosting them permanently or just for the purpose of scraping them from photobucket?

I imagine it will take quite some time, hopefully your script will weed out and remove the duplicates too or I dread to think how many images you'll have  :signLOL:

Will your script update the existing posts with the new link, you know, since you have Admin privileges and all that?

It should be permanent providing there is enough space we should be moving the entire site to this server one day soon.

The script copies the images and parent folder name to the new server then updates the image link in the post. It does not replace the clickable link that some of these are wrapped in but it should be much better. There could be a balls up if people happen to be using the same parent folder name and image name lets see what happens.

Hats off to you for doing this

Since photobucket has done this, I kinda gave up updating my build thread. Irritated the hell out of me as others I’m sure

You had better start updating it again  as its looking good now.

Most things are sorted now updated about 40,000 image links and copied 9gb of images from photobucket .

But some images are missing i'm trying another pass though the million plus messages  :rolleye: just incase it missed them.

Thank you so much for doing that @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457)  can start updating my build thread again. Lost all motivation for it at the thought of trying to upload all the pictures again.

I took all mine off PB and put them on flickr...people are going to have to PM OP's if pics are desired being restored and hopefully receive the help needed.

Hmm is this not the point of what dazza's done? As in, no need for OPs to do anything and that all PB pictures are restored automatically?

Fantastic job, though. Tip of the hat your direction @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) !

Yes, but I deleted ALL my pics of photobucket due to their behavior annoying me, way before this... I don't use flickr or intend to sign up either
I only really had one really usful picture I created, detailing the A/C Climatronic wire swaps

I can't put it back up on photobucket, as the link is already broke

Thanks so much for doing this Dazza! Checked my build thread last night ad the pictures I hadn't yet moved to Flikr from PB are all showing.

Glad that the 'how-to' guides I'd bookmarked are back - glad that PB hasn't beaten the forum! Great stuff!

If space is an issue, could you get your scripts to target only certain sections within the forum? For example the how-to guides and project threads would be the primary targeted areas then general areas after.

I don't know why i was worried about space i have 2x1TB set up in raid 1 so 1TB available. I scraped every photobucket image that i could find and it came to 8gb.

Did you delete these images from pb? could not scrape them

Can you put in a script that when photobucket is detected in the image URL it will not allow you to post? (I know you can ;-)   )

Using the word censoring feature i've added a dirty fix which should stop that dreaded image from being shown in new posts.

in new posts photobucket..com will be replaced with photobucket.

But if you edit an old post that still has broken photobucket links it will break them more.

Not to sure on the last fix it stops every photobucket image from being displayed (99% of these are photobucket image not available as they would not scrape).
