I have another thread of my car breaking down and found it to be a snapped cam chain. I have got the head off and refurbished and refitted it.
I am now at the point of fitting the camshafts and cover and see you need the vw sealant. I went to tps and it was like 80 or 90 pounds. Is there something else I can use?

I went to eurocarparts and got this stuff called vital red rtv.

The thing is I have today and tomorrow off work so if that vital red stuff is OK then I could get some work done otherwise will need to wait till next weekend waiting for delivery of other sealant and hope it is suitable.

Wurth Flange Sealant is roughly half the price.
Don't use silicon. It has to be the proper stuff.
If it were me I would be using the VW stuff. What is £80 vs having to do it all again later down the line because the cheap stuff didn't do the job properly?

This. Stick to genuine VW for things like this - I had something similar on my old MK4 TDI where I needed a new rocker cover gasket and the garage I used at the time fitted a cheaper one from ECP that only lasted a few days before it had to be swapped again due to it being of poor quality & leaked oil.

I know folk are cash strapped these days but certain things on these cars really are 'save now, pay later'. Fine if it's a daily hack that will be moved on in 12 months, but if it's a keeper, it's better to use genuine parts.
No one likes a lecture, but I'm only saying it from experience :grin:

It just seems a massive piss take for a little tube of sealant when I've already spend several hundred pounds on parts and spent a lot of money on new tools to work on it. I'll have to think about it and prepare myself for the pain of VW having there way with my bum hole.

TPS are open till 6pm. If they have it in stock could get today. If I close my eyes when paying with my card maybe it wont hurt so much.

Lads, at what point do you need sealant and where? I've seen several guides to doing this job and never seen mention of a sealant.

If your just changing the chain and tensioner the camshaft ladder/cover does not need to come off. I needed to get my cylinder head refurbished as I had bent valves due to the chain snapping. Don't know if the chain just snapped or the tentioner failed and made the chain snap.

I think I'll give this stuff a go. If it don't work or leaks in the future then I'll get the VW stuff. If I have to do it again it's just a little extra work and not the end of the world and should't take me that long.

Used it on few MKIVs to do injector harness replacement, never had any come backs.

What about the high temp loctite liquid gasket we all used for our engine sumps when doing the pickup pipe?
That not the same?

I wouldn't be using silicon on the cam cradle personally. I know it seems a p1ss take but anaerobic flange sealants aren't cheap anyway, it's not just VW bum raping us for the sheer hell of it.
As I said, the Wurth stuff is good, and Permatex do good Anaerobic flange sealants too, if you can find any in this silly little backwater country.
The engine won't suddenly go into meltdown from using the wrong stuff, but like reusing stretch bolts and turning the boost up.......you've pulled the pin from a grenade. Who knows when it'll let go, but it will.

Hey all,
I drive an 07 GTI 2.0T FSI engine, BPY engine code. I'm seeping oil from the cam carrier joint and am planning to go in and reseal it with the VW green sealant. Not intending to replace camshafts or anything else under the carrier, just reseal it.
To do this, do I need to lock down the cams with some sort of cam-lock tool? Remove the timing chain? Reset timing? I haven't messed with timing before, but I'll end up paying a lot more if I mess this timing up. I know I need to remove HPFP, cam follower, etc. but I don't think those interrupt timing too much.
Any feedback appreciated, a DIY guide would be even better!
