Wonder if anyone can help. Im looking to sort out my front wings at some point and not sure if its best to try and get it repaired or just replace the front wings. If repairing, can the foam behind the arches be stripped away - preventing it from returning. Or is it just best to start from scratch. I tried going the warranty route but unfortuantely VW said it had been painted before at some point using a depth gauge.
Heres a photo of the extent of it.....any advice appreciated.

Ah mate that's a pain.
I'd just bite the bullet and replace the wings and get them painted. It's a nightmare chasing rust around. Hopefully someone else might be able to shed some light on the foam being revised or not.

You can get painted wings on ebay for £95 a side. Probably not the best quality, but better than a load of rust.
I've removed both my foam inserts.

This. This is the route I went down with my MK5 and if it's the same seller that you come across then they are good wings for the money. The paint match on mine (LC9Z) was spot on and so was the fit just about, after a bit of aligning.
If your MK5 is a TDI then it's recommended that you re-use the inner foam as this helps reduce vibrations that are transmitted from the engine to the body, the trick with preventing the corrosion in future is to trim around a centre metre off the end of the foam as it's the lower tip of the foam that stores the most water and is in constant contact with the lip of the wing (this is what I also did).

Thanks Liam that's good to know there good. I'm waiting to hear back from VW on my driver's side one, they won't do anything with the passenger side so might opt for eBay one "ready-to-fit-parts" is the seller.
Then I just have to sort my sill and boot handle rust :scared:

Liam, could you post a link to the wings you bought? Or the name of the seller

Could never understand why the foam wasn't inside a plastic bag. Ford amongst others realised water isn't friendly towards metal and placed their foam spacers and sound deadening in plastic bags.

My wings are being replaced this week @ Blackburn Lookers 100% goodwill by them LC9Z.......just hope they look right after they've finished

I took my recently acquired 2007 plate in to vw bury st Edmunds and had it inspected. The guy said it should get authorisation ...been waiting over 3 weeks now to hear from the body shop to get it done :scared:

i've been waiting since June/July 2017 to get to where I am now....cars been at the dealer since Monday, started it Tuesday - miss having a car as I have no courtesy car lol so relying on my dad at the moment
-
I took mine to my local VW dealer who said it had been painted and wouldn't submit the claim so I took it to another dealer who agreed it had been painted but tried the paint right next to the rust and said it was reading normal just next to it so they submitted a claim for me.
5 months of waiting but today I have been told it will be fixed for free. Don't give up, try a few dealers......

I might try those Lovian Spares when it come to it. If the fit isnt 100% then that doesnt bother me, as long as the paint doesnt start peeling or anything like that.

@Ads22 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=20691) yeah I was thinking of using them myself, for 2 wings on ebay Lothian Spares are about £180 painted. But i was able to get mine done under goodwill, apparently they go off the mileage of the car as well. With mine being only 73000 miles I was ok. Worth a try though trying the dealer.
Even polished my headlights as they were badly crazed from the previous owner. £60 for them to be polished up.

Hi,
Just joined the forum and would like to relate my recent experience with this colloquially named 'wing edge corrosion'
I own a 2007 Gti and recently noticed paint bubbling around the edges of both front wings and after looking on line found that this was a common issue with all mk 5 cars and was well known to VW.
Naively thinking that a repair was now a formality under the 12 year anti corrosion warranty , I contacted my local VW dealer to book car in for inspection and repair.
Initially the dealer would not even inspect the car as it was 11 years old and gave me some waffle about the corrosion was not actually corrosion but was a mechanical issue?
Next call was to VW customer care who eventually managed to get the dealer to take the car in.
After checking paint thicknesses around the bodywork they then made an offer to replace and repaint both front wings providing I contributed 75% of the cost. VW consider this to be a gesture of goodwill ?

How are you thinking about going about the boot handle rust?
I've noticed that's it's starting on mine.
Is it worth applying some rust eater to start with to try to slow it down?
