Hello think I may have a small issue but am not sure,
I’ve just had a new thermostat fitted and now my car does get to 90 and stayed there, but does seem to take a while what could it be
-
Depends what you mean by a while..... The drop in temperature, coupled with having the heaters on inside the car can have a massive impact on warm up time......
For instance - Mine can get up to 90 on the gauge in about 2 miles..... but if I drive gentle and have the heaters on full blast it'll take a lot longer
If there definitely is a problem then it will be caused by the thermostat you've just fitted as that is what controls engine temperature
-
It's your inline thermostat

-
Got a similar problem where at idle the temp starts to go down a little and that points to an open inline bypass stat.
Replacing mine but noticed the new genuine replacement lets a little air pass when I blow through it..........is that ok?

We’re is the inline one

It isn’t half as bad as it was but like last night it was 8 deg out and I had my heaters on,but I got out my town stopped at lights etc then drove a few mile down the duelcarrage way.
My old s3(mk1)was quicker I think

The manual AXX has it near the throttle body pipe........the DSG has another above the gearbox

Don’t suppose you have the part number for the inline one,tps said when I orderd the main one they only do one

4E0 121 113
Don’t understand tps and a bloke on eBay says that they only have one thermostat(main) for my engine code axx
-
TPS is Volkswagen Trade Parts Specialist............basically the supplier of genuince parts to dealers, but some people get accounts like myself (ex HQ and dealer employee) and gain trade price on parts.
If you do not have access to this then do throught the dealer.......just ask them if your car has the part number mentioned.....I bet money on it having one being an AXX.

He's wrong.
Mine is AXX manual and it has an inline. I replaced it myself but I don't have the part number.
The DSG has two inlines depending on the year. Same part number.
-
Part number is 4E0 121 113

Changed my inline stat today and the old one was wide open. The car warms up a lot quicker now and does not drop in temperature at idle like before 😊

The manual AXX has it near the throttle body pipe, have to look carefully as it is partially hidden........the DSG has another above the gearbox
-

@AntB (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9507) here is your definitive answer
If you have two inline stats which is sounds like you do.
Buy two of these 4E0 121 113 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Original-Volkswagen-VW-Genuine-Transmission-Cooler-Thermostat-4E0121113/1016963273
Then buy some coolant G13 now has superceeded G12
You need a special pliers to release the clips as per this thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=78341.0
If this is too difficult then go to your local garage and ask them to do it.
-
Get a genuine one and not a aftermarket version.
You want to change it once due to the hastle factor.
-
The inline one dosent look 2 difficult,I still don’t get why tps and ecp say I haven’t got one tho

I only have one as it’s a gti
-
Finally done this today, was really easy tbh,the old one was f**ked and I could blow both ways now it warms up really fast even with the heaters on
-
Good stuff. Not a good time of year to have heater woes!
-
No defiantly not!!
Glad both my main and inline have been done now,was bloody cold upside down on the drive doing it but so glad it’s fixxed
-
I replaced main thermostat and inline on my MK5 GTI, now temp stays steady at 90 once it reaches there. It still takes so long to warm up. 10-12mins of driving until it reaches operating temp. Is that normal? What are your warm up times?
-
3 miles and mine is at operating temp.....like clock work now.
If you have a DSG there are two inlines.
