Hi Guys and Gals.
Looking for some help with regards to purchasing a car.
GTi 05 plate
90,000 miles
Full Service History
Black
Cloth interior
Xenon Headlights
Cost = £9k.
Is this a good deal, and is there anything to watch out for with Regards to the first of the Mk5 GTi?

The price isn't too bad, you'd probably be able to knock around £1k off that if you looked around though.
I'm presuming this is a manual too?
Early GTI's had a steering rack creaking issue. It didn't affect all car's but is obviously easy to check out. :smiley:

Steering Rack issues, will check that.
Its up for £10k mate, managed to talk them down to £9k.
Yeah its manual.
At the moment i drive an 08 plate Astra SRi CDTi 150 tuned to 200. Just dont know weather or not to go for the GTi

Sounds a bit pricey to me for those kinda miles, i bought mine for £10k and it only had 29,000 on the clock

That would be to many miles for me TBH, rather spend another 1k and get something with a bit more life left in it

yes its bad enough when you hear of one year old GTi's needing new steering racks and suspension top mounts and drop links oh and new clutches and DMF's etc etc, i wouldnt been keen on owning one with 90k on it :surprised:, ETTO though :jumping:

There was a fella with a leon who hit 90,000 miles on his TFSI and his needed major engine work. Was done under warranty iirc

Very unfounded statement poverty imo.

you will also (IMO of course) have trouble selling on a 100k + golf when/ if you want to sell it on, i had a quick look on Piston heads and for about 10k you can get half the miles and im sure you could haggle also :happy2:

Valve carbon deposit is a main culprit on high mileage cars
Plus from my own experiences, the majority of people who have trouble with their cars during the warranty period will not post up on the open forum about their issues. Its always usually kept to PM's.

100k is not a lot to be honest, it was 20 years ago but not on a modern engine, agree on price though, too much.

I disagree when it comes to direct injection engines. Just look at the old direct injection mitsu carismas. All these latest technologies that are meant to be super efficient will not last as long as the old stuff. Same goes for boilers, the condensing ones will be alot more trouble that the old tried and tested units of the past.

I was always under the impression Vw's lasted forever.
86,000 miles is alot yes.
But I thought these where build to last. My clio 182 done 96,000 miles from factory and never missed a beat. And its still going strong now.

Not just this forum like i said, GolfGTi.co.uk, much much longer then this new forum.
Only ones ive heard of experiancing problems are ones that have been very highly tuned. But i wont go down that road incase your current cars engine gets drawn as an example of that.
Again.. if the TFSi was such a bad engine, that all car makers would be ditching it, and not still producing it.
I still dont agree with you saying people would rather Pm then not make it known in the public domain. Thats what these forums are all about.

agree to disagree poverty, have had cars with more than 100k with no probs. as its a newish car makes it even less of a problem as its not just doing 10 miles a day so the engine is warm. i know people who cover 100k in 2 years.

True to say that the majority of cars with issues are modded ones, however on SCN everything is done by PM due to SEAT UK frequenting the site. Two people have been stung because of this.
The car makers will improve their products, they wont ditch a design that is allowing them to meet the regs, but its because of these regs they ahve to meet that the engines will need more TLC. VAG have even commented about valves and the effects of carbon deposits in their patents. The matter of the fact is all the modern engines today which feature direct injection will have carbon deposit issues, and if you look at the US forums you can see of plenty of cases from bmw to audi etc
