Hi I have a 2006 Mk5 gti with the BWA engine. It's developed a strange noise on idle where it sound like a engine knock but goes away for a few seconds and then comes back. The more you rev the car the noise goes away. I've had a new timing chain and tensioner fitted but still have same noise. Any help much appreciated

Does the noise sound more like a rattle ? Or knocking.
No expert but had a similar issue with mine giving off a rattle onced warmed up and idling same BWA engine, had the timing chain and tensioner change, that got rid of the noise for me. Another part the adjuster is a recommended part to also have changed but costs are £350+ just for the part so I left it out.
It could be that yours has failed. Unless you also had that changed?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it sound more like a rattle but I've had the chain and tensioner replaced and the noise is still there. It happens when engine is both cold and warm.

Any EM light on dash at all?
Could be rods on oil pump. But can be certain that this could be it.
There are different noises of rattling.

No EML light on. Would it need to be a new oil pump if it's the rods?

If it’s the oil pump then yes because the rod is damaged - watch the YT vid I’ve posted (below). But without having you car checked you won’t know exactly where the knocking is from. It could also be a damaged coil pack because of one is damaged or faulty it will show signs of engine knocking and misfire on one of ther cylinders. It could be a camshaft timing chain and tensioner that can make a rattle noise like a diesel car! If this is the case go for the complete kit i.e chain & tensioner adjuster! But unless you get it checked first you can’t be certain.
