Title: Snapped spring or jumped out of spring cup?
Post by: ReflexRob on January 05, 2018, 12:48:39 pm
Investigated a metallic rattle / clank over bumps yesterday to find that my front offside spring has either jumped out of the spring cup or has snapped.

I couldn't feel a break in the spring but it is sitting half in and out of the lower cup. Both sides of the car appear to be at the same ride height.

Is it at all possible for the spring to jump out of the cup? If not it has to be broken

My car is a 2005 standard manual GTi - any idea what spring I need from either Euro Car Parts or GSF? They have 3 variants 'standard suspension', 'Heavy duty suspension' or non-sports suspension. Presumably standard is what I need unless they have just listed all Golf suspension under the specific list for my car?!

Thanks for any help.

There is a set of ED30 Springs (the same) in the for sale section for £50.

They are very very easy to change

When mine broke I heard the rattle just like you, About 5cm had broken off at the bottom end of the spring. See here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,115379.0.html

I expect the same thing has happened!

Cheers, I ended up getting new Sachs ones from ecp as I can pick them up tomorrow in the off chance I can do the job this weekend. Sadly it's a front spring so lots more to do!

Yeah probably a snapped spring, symptoms sound exactly like mine.
