Title: Coolant temp sensor
Post by: Graham1990 on February 02, 2018, 05:24:22 pm
Hi guys, does anyone know if there are two coolant temp sensors? If so does anyone know the part numbers? My local vw dealer are saying they don’t know if there is one or two sensors and there is only one listed on the system. Car is a 2005 mk5 gti, thanks 👍

There should be two...one near the vacuum pump/brake booster and the other near the alternator.
This may help: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_V/19-WATER-Coolant_Temperature_Sensors_Replacement/19-WATER-Coolant_Temperature_Sensors_Replacement.htm

Thank you mate, I’ve replaced the main thermostat already, is there a second thermostat in the system somewhere ? The car eventually gets up to temp but it takes about 10/15 miles to. The temp creeps up extremely slowly.

Yeah the second sensor is the "Radiator outlet temperature" in VAG-COM.   The main sensor in the front thermostat housing is what the engine uses for fuel metering.  Not sure what the second one is for.  Dash gauge?

Some cars have more than 1 thermostat.  DSG definitely has at least 2 and some manuals have 2 as well.  My 07 ED30 has 1, so it's all a bit confusing.

I’ve just ordered an in line thermostat through vw so hopefully I have one lol. Apparently there is the main thermostat and then there is another one Connected to a coolant pipe under the throttle body somewhere. I’ll have a look in the morning and make sure I have one there to replace. If not I’ll have to order the coolant temp sensors.
