Hello ladies and gents
It's been quite some time since I last posted and to cut a very long story short I sold my GTI last year and got myself a T5 to convert into a camper. While I have enjoyed the camper life I have missed my golf terribly so this year I will be selling my T5 in the hope that I can find the right ED30, I always wanted the 30 but couldn't afford one at the time so my plan was to slowly but surely modify my gti to have the same running gear.
So questions I must ask are, should I go for the ED30 or MK6 R???????? I loved the way my GTI drove but that was with a fair amount spent on her so hows the R in standard form compared to ED30?
Also in prep for my ko4 upgrade I bought a unitronic DV relocation kit that arrived after I sold my GTI, I have just posted it up on ebay for auction so if anyone is looking to go that route check out the ad

A decent ED30 running stage 2+ and sitting on decent suspension is a very pleasant thing indeed. Try both and see what you prefer.
Personally I've never been a fan of the MK6 platform. I'd probably get the S3 over that. Equally bland but the fit and finish is a lot better.

How far did you take the GTI power wise? If you were accustomed to driving around the traction issues of a fettled GTI then an ed30 is a logical step. If you found yourself begging for easy traction maybe the mk6 R is a better bet.
For me an ed30 is a much more special car than a mk6 R, in all but sheer straight line grip in all gears.
A few people I've spoken to that switched to the mk6 R said it felt pretty slow in comparison until it was up at Stage 2 and beyond. They're probably not slow per se, but quite surefooted so don't have that lairy side a quick GTI or ed30 does.
If you're chasing big power (TTE420 etc) then AWD starts to make more and more sense. If you're sticking with the standard turbo a 2+ ed30 will probably be lots more fun.

I took my Gti to 280bhp and that combined with my bilstien coilover set up made for and extremely entertaining ride. I’m not chasing big power anymore as living with a 140bhp van for almost a year I’ve came accustomed to not going anywhere in a hurry and learned to relax a lot more but saying that I would like to have a little power there to have some fun on occasion.
I had thought about going S3 route but I don’t know why but it doesn’t do it for me, I think that my mind is pretty much set on an ed30 but I haven’t ruled out the R and just recently I have been offered a polo G40 which is an absolutely remarkable thing but doesn’t seem to be to practical

My standard GTI mk5 is nothing compared to a standard mk7 R (not a mk6 R). Totally different animals. Once you've had a drive of the mk6 R will be interesting to hear what you think of it.
