Title: IC Pipe Oil leak
Post by: neilw on March 17, 2018, 05:02:53 pm
Did my oil change today and found a fair amount of oil around my Turbo to IC (rubber) pipe. One end its oily and the other has gunk around the connection. So I'm not sure if that's faulty or just unclean.

Does anyone know what I need to sort it? new seals, or new pipe?

I'd start with new seals. They perish over time. :\

Let me know if 8 and 8A are the right size.  I have ordered 8 (3C0145117H) a few times from the dealer, using my VIN number, and on each occasion the O ring has been too small.

That and the fact the engine movement wears the O rings out in no time (and also the internal bore of the metal pipe), I gave up and went with a 6R intercooler and the bayonet fitting cut off the metal pipe, and replaced with a regular 2.25" rolled edge pipe.   I've not seen any oil sweats since  :happy2:

Remember, if you see oil on those pipe joins, it means boost is leaking.   The air pressure is forcing oil past the seal.  It always was a sh*t design, purely for speed of assembly on the production line, but terrible sealing integrity.    The problem is compounded by remaps.

FYI there is a guy on ebay who sells the discharge pipe (k03 & k04 turbo outlets) with the stupid bayonet connection cut off, and a straight pipe welded on. So you can just put the silicone hose on the straight pipe, and clamp with a decent jubilee etc.

I cant share from the work PC, but If you type in "tfsi discharge pipe" I think its the first result. £40. You just contact him to specify k03 or k04 (the metal part of the discharge pipe is actually identical, its just the silicone at the turbo end that differs) and go from there.

Looks normal to me.... they do tend to weep oil over time.

I'll let you know how I get on I got 3C0145117F and 3C0145117H from TPS, they had them on the shelf for about £9 each

@Pudding (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) I put these in this afternoon. No issues with the size of the seals.

Easy job, 45mins including jacking up and cleaning up the oil

Thanks mate.  I will keep those PNs for future reference!

I think a long term fix for this problem is a slightly thicker O ring, but those special green ones are hard to find in the aftermarket.

Yes this is on my to do list also.

I used some PTFE tape on the pipe and then the original seal on top to give a snug seal and appear to be working great at the moment......but I do want to change them for a fresh set.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll check mine in a few months, Now its all been cleaned up it'll be easy to see if it's still leaking. If its still leaking I'll try that.
