Just had my main thermostat changed out in my 06 MK5 Manual GTI. I bought 1 inline one as well but my mechanic said he couldnt see that I had one.
Does the manual have one or is it just DSG?
Cheers

Some manuals have 2, some have 1. It seems VW can't even tell with VIN numbers.
If you can't find a second one above the gearbox (under the chain cover), then you have just the one. Cars with just 1 have a radiator outlet temp sensor there instead.

Well they replaced the main thermostat under the alternator but couldn't see ANY inline stats.
So youre saying I should have at least one? Where is that located?

You have just the main stat then.

I also have an 06 manual and it only has the main thermostat. :happy2:

Manuals have 0 or 1, DSG have 1 or 2. Pretty sure it was the earlier models tended to have more inlines than the later ones. Gonna have a bash at changing my main one and inline today but just cant face all the scraped knuckles and frustration I know is inevitable

Mine just has the main thermostat - couldn’t find an inline one, and yes had an outlet temp sensor instead. it’s an 07 manual ed30.
I swapped mine out last week (eventually) and it is fine now - always stays between 84-87C.
Was pretty difficult job though as a lot of people have said! In the end I had the whole front of the car off as I also changed the intercooler, so it wasnt too hard but Id imagine its really difficult if you are just removing the alternator as there wouldn’t be much space to work.
I had to remove the black plastic boost tube up to the inlet manifold (sorry - doing know proper name!) so that I could undo the bolt holding on the black metal coolant tube which comes out the middle of the thermostat. I also really struggled to get the connector off the bottom of the old thermostat as had sealed itself on there pretty well. Would have been real tricky without having the access I had. Respect for those who have done it without taking the bumper etc off!
